How many times do you feed your pups?

edited September 2009 in Food, Nutrition, & Health
I wasn't sure if I should put this in the general or food/nutrition I hope it's in the right place..

I was wondering how many times do you feed your dogs? I'm just curious I thought it'd be a good question to ask.

I feed mine two times a day Bella was three when she was a little pup, but now two times.

My dogs are free fed. There is always food in their bowls. I know this doesn't work for everyone, and is not for all dog breeds, but my two Shibas are very picky and like to eat at strange times, so it works for us! They never gorge or overeat.

I also free feed. They never over eat, but Nola is not a fan of the bowl being empty. Even if she is not hungry, if she walks by it and it is empty, she will dig in it to try and find more. :) That is my cue to fill it back up!

We're trying to work towards gorge/rest with the two little ones, but this is only supposed to be done on raw.

Right now all three still eat 2 square meals a day.. we can't free feed. Lantis is a vacuum. Of course, its also hard to free-feed raw.. I think our house would be covered in flies otherwise.

    Rei eats 2x a day.
Sage decided he only needs occasional breakfast so normally eats supper only. If he happens to be hanging around interested in breakfast I give him Reilly Rations too.

My guys have a meal in the morning to which I add any supplements and extras, and they are freed fed in the evening when we get home from work till an hour before we go to sleep.

Mine eat twice a day for now. I haven't been doing raw for more than a few months and am still transitioning a little, but I'm noticing that the dogs would prefer to hork a lot down at the AM meal as they just aren't as enthusiastic about the PM meal regardless of how much or what they have eaten in the AM. They don't poo nearly as much as there aren't any grains in their diet, so I'm thinking it's time to start doing a fasting day to let their systems process what they have eaten or only do once daily feeding and offer a small snack in the evening. I don't know, it seems to be heading that way on it's own.

Thats smart, Lindsay... a lot of raw feeders find huge success in once a day feedings with small PM snack and a day of fasting.
  • We started off with twice a day feeding, but we've moved to free feeding since Katsu is so damn picky. Lately she's been eating out of her green treatball before the bowl. Even though it's the same food. I guess her working for it makes her think it's extra special.

Kristin do you ever have a problem with Miso and Sake stealing each others food?

I think Saya would do fine on free feeding, but I Dink our mix breed is a vacuum always wanting food. Thanks for all the answers. =)

Mine do AM and PM feedings, but Yogi wouldn't mind skipping breakfast. He really wouldn't mind skipping morning potty either, but we are out of the house by 6:30 and if he doesn't go in the morning, his tiny bladder would never be able to hold it all day.

Sometimes there is food left over from dinner but they almost always finish it by the time we are back from our evening walk and I've never seen food by bedtime.

Joe, I actually never see Miso eat! LOL. He goes downstairs at like 2am to eat because he knows no one will bother him at that time.

Sake doesn't "steal" his food per-say but when she is eating she gets mad if he comes up and tries to eat too, even out of the different bowl.

Our Viggo and Kira get new food in their bowls twice a day, morning and evening. But normally they don't eat everything at once so it's some kind of a "free-food-version" :)

As someone said before this does not work for every dog or breed.

Sakey Sake Sake poor Miso has to hide at night to eat. lololol.

Koda is fed a prepared meal in the AM with his fish oil, vitamins, etc. Then he has free fed kibble all day. I really don't think he eats it, but he whines if his bowl is empty. Then, he gets his dinner but Koda really is picky too. He doesn't want to necessarily chomp down when the food is put there. He will save it for when he needs it and graze on it.

Tiger seems to be the opposite. He isn't too fussed about his morning meal (approx 8am) and it can take him up to an hour of picking to get it all done, we've cut it down a little. He eats his pm meal with no problems though.

At the moment (there's always room for change, my dogs will "tell" me)...once to twice a day depending upon activity level for that day.

On a regular "stay at home or rest" day...the Malinois gets fed twice a day and the Shikoku get fed once a day.

On days in which we go tracking I just split up the day's meals...the Shikoku will eat twice that day.

On days in which we are more active with physical outdoor activities...the Malinois gets fed 3 times a day and the Shikoku 2 times plus a delicious snack.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

[Any puppies will get fed 2-3 times per day. For me, usually just twice a day plus treats or a snack]
