Jen - I understand about looking at petfinder and in the paper. I do that as well. I can't afford another dog right now for several different reasons, but one of the main ones is not wanting to lose time with Jazz. I would love to have another shiba (or to get a Hokkaido), but there's so much time needed to introduce the dogs and get them socialized together and I'm gone from my house 9 hours a day. I hope that when I get a new job, I'll be able to telecommute. If so, then I may get to look at getting another dog. I know it's important to spend a lot more time together with the dogs when you are introducing them to one another over time.
I can tell you what I do that makes me feel better about seeing shibas on petfinder. I am always being told by people, I would love to find a shiba (I keep a little list) and I talk with them about the dog. Some I feel would be a good match - others not so much. Those I feel wouldn't match well, I go into a lot of the picky details about shibas - they turn off pretty quick. The ones where they would be a good fit always get more excited when I talk about them. When I go online and see a shiba in the area - I email my friends the link to the dog. My goal is to help those shibas find forever homes. This way, while I'm not adoptig them, someone I know is and I can still see the shibas. It will also give Jazz some shiba playmates close by.
I don't know if being an adoption liason would work for you, but it helps me deal better with the desire of wanting another dog, but not being able to have one. Just thought I'd share a possible outlet for wanting to see shibas in forever homes.
