wheres the bathroom!

edited May 2008 in General
like i said in the Kiba and Avy spam discussion, Kiba isnt getting where the bathroom is (outside) u.u' .... to prevent dissasters I just take her out like 1 or 2 times between 1 or 2 hours, in the noon and evening its alright, but in the mornings when i wake up the whole place its a mess T.T, but i dont wanna correct her because i wasnt in the moment i just say a little "Kiba No!".... is there any trick to let her know that the bathroom its outside or shes just too young (2months) and she will correct that by the time?....

Not so good... When we found Josephine, she had a few accidents, but only because we didn't know how to interpret her message to us that she had to go...And she has that "excitement pee" issue (alot when younger, and occasionally now)... Not sure of the best thing to do, but I would try to keep her overnight where you can hear her whine or otherwise let you know when she has to go. Dogs do communicate that way, but I know we were slow to discern the meaning.

Crate her. She will not soil where she sleeps. Well, she might for the first few times until she realizes she has to stay in there for a while. This will also teach her how to "hold it". Also, if you put bells on the door where you take her out to do her business, you can teach her to paw at the bells to make noise and then that could be her sign to tell you she needs out. I might be the only one who does this, but, I usually train puppies with pee pads first. Then I move on to outside. It might sound silly, but puppies go more often than adult dogs, and if you work and you're not home, its better they go on something meant for their pee and poop rather than having to clean up a whole big mess. But, for outside training, just praise and treat the heck out of her after she pee's or poop's outside. She'll get the hang of it eventually. After my dogs poop, they still come to me for praise. She is still very young, so have patience. Portia wasn't potty trained until 4 months and Ninja was 6 months, but we got him at 4 months so... I would say give it 2 months or so and she should be ok.

Romi makes excellent suggestions! I too trained Tsuki @ 3 months on pee pads and then moved outside when she could hold it longer. We also have bells on the door we use most frequently to let the pups outside. We started by hitting it and making a big deal then go outside until they went.. then having their nose hit it and making a big deal and going outside until they went (so they get the purpose of the bells and being outside) and now they do it on their own. Its lovely.

Tsuki was the youngest dog I've ever had at 3 months old and it took her a solid two months before she stopped pooping in the house - she was a little better with pee but the bells made the difference.

Usually a pup can hold it 1 hour for every month they are. So she needs to go out ebery two hours with the exception of when she sleeps longer but she'll have to go right after. Crate training is the best method because it teaches them to hold themselves but keep in mind shes a puppy and cant hold her self for unreasonable amounts. Also let her sleep in the crate at night near your room so when she does have to go she'll let you know and you can let her out.
