Yesterday Noah and I picked up our Icelandic Sheepdog, Skella (pr. skedla). She's just over a year old and she is such a sweetheart. We're at Noah's cousin's place because he was having his new baby blessed so we came to be there for that. She loved playing at the playground with all the kids.
Well, we got home last night and introduced Tojo to Skella pretty much right away. There was a bit of snarkiness but it was short-lived. We introduced Rakka to Skella this morning. We were going to take them off to neutral territory, but Skella accidentally met Rakka while Rakka was in her crate. Whoops. The reaction pleasantly surprised me, though, so I decided to just proceed at home. Rakka is wearing a Jafco muzzle, which we've been getting her used to for about a month. We originally bought it because I was sick of getting bitten when we trimmed her nails and she could bite through the nylon muzzle we bought. Then we discovered that she was a lot more subdued around Tojo on it and doesn't seem to mind wearing it, so it seemed like a good tool to use in this situation. Plus, Rakka actually did bite Tojo pretty hard when they met and I didn't want a repeat.
Things have gone better than I thought they would, honestly. There have been a few growls, but overall, they all seem to be accepting each other just fine. They sort of eye each other suspiciously as they pass each other in the hall, but I imagine they'll warm up pretty quick. Especially Tojo and Skella. Tojo seems to get the fact that she's here to stay and I think is already treating her like a pack member.
Skella's great with the kids. There was a one-year-old baby at her last home, so she's gentle and friendly. Isaac is pretty delighted by her, but I'm pretty sure Rakka is still his favourite! When we got home he immediately started looking for Rakka and when he found her, he just said her name over and over again with a big huge grin on his face. How adorable.
Well, I must say, Skella has a way with other dogs. She's fitting in way better than I could've even imagined. Rakka has not tried to eat her once and I've even been leaving toys and bones out. I actually think she's stabilizing the relationship between Rakka and Tojo and her excellent recall seems to be contagious. It's almost magical, lol.

How's she getting along with Tojo and Rakka? And the kids?
What made you decide on an Icelandic Sheepdog?
