Brad - Regarding the nails. My guess is that they are growing so fast since most of your walks don't take place on concrete and pavement anymore. At least from your pictures it looks like you are usually walking in the dirt/sand areas that surround your home.
I didn't really read all that business about the allergies...maybe tomorrow.
Brad,
Sebacious adenitis is often misdiagnosed. It probably isn't, and thrroid is a good suggestion.
Alopecia has mny sources. I've given you names who are experienced in this. If you do a thryroid panel, send it to MSU, (Michigan State University) as they have most reliable anyalasis. Do the free T4 and complete thyroid panel.
The thryoid panel done in a vet's office is inconclusive. MSU is more expensive but you get complete results from a professional endocrinologist.
I've been away and am just now checking in. The photos of before and now are drastically different. I don't have a clue but I wish you all a fast and complete recovery. Poor Maui. At least he isn't itchy.
Ouch, dramatically different looking at Maui from a desktop in lieu of a laptop. Oh My. Hmmmm. Any skin specialists in your area? Have you changed diets? Maybe allergic to something in the yard since being given full reign?
The basset hound we fostered had atopic dermatitis (I had to check the old record file!) but his immune system had a significantly lower function than it should have. Linus, the basset, was originally a pet store dog I believe, so poor breeding mixed with allergens and his lowered immune system were a really, really bad combination. We had to take him for skin tests. With vitamins, diet change, and he was grass sensitive, he did improve, but it did not cure it.. We noticed that on his belly section where his legs were and under his arm pits were very dark from hyperpigmentation due to the allergy. that area felt coarse to the touch too. We also had them check for skin cancer, because that causes changes in pigmentation, and the easiest place to see hair loss and pigmentation changes is the belly/arm pit area
Poor Maui - it's probably a harmless allergen combined with an immune issue that's just really getting to him. He didn't have this before you moved though, right?
