Shikoku Club Biz

*poof - appears*

Working on getting some T-Shirts, Keychains and some other "super cool" items done for the club. I don't want to be selfish and just have Kei-kun as the model. Those of you whom are interested and have Shikoku, please send a few good quality photos (the largest file you have) of your dog to: ShikokuSpirit@sterndrachen.com.

Please label your message: Shikoku Club Photos.

I will get some price estimates for them and post later, for those would like to own some Shikoku stuff.

Those interested joining the club (even if you don't have a Shikoku, we appreciate the support!), please e-mail me and I will send you an application form. Since we don't have much going on this year, just trying to build membership and funds for the club...is everybody okay with $5 for membership fee? And then I will mail out a membership card for 2008-2009 members.

Please label your message: Shikoku Club Application.

Club Officers - Is there anything we would like to discuss?

Thanks so much!

Corina Annette Gonzalez
Shikoku Club President

Hehe hey Corina. $5 seems like a very reasonable amount. Good luck with it all!

    Hey Corina,

This is the first that I have heard of the "club". What is the purpose? Do we really want to attract AKC?
$5 is very cheap. I can send pictures of Tnji once I know more about the club.

Please, just to clarify for me, sometimes I'm a little slow especially after a long day of driving. I generally understand the conflict with AKC and Japanese akitas vs American akitas, and that shibas are pointed that way. So are you not wanting AKC involvment for that same reason with the shikoku (wanting to keep the breed standard as close to the Japanese standard as possible)? Or is it something else that I am totally not up to date on? If someone would be so kind I would be glad to know.

It's, honestly, not AKC itself. It's the people. The important thing that we can do for Shikoku is to build a strong breed club. So, yes, we can keep original Shikoku type. The problem is that people want to change a breed to fit what looks pretty or pleasing to the eye in form of movement. Without realizing by doing so, they are changing what the breed was originally bred to do. Since we are not creating a new breed our job, as breeders, is to maintain original function.

If the dog can no longer perform and function in this matter or is having difficulty, then something is wrong with that particular breeding program. Standards themselves aren't written perfectly. The same standard can be perceived in different ways to each individual. Then there are things that aren't written in the standard but assumed that everybody in the breed already knows. So we have to teach others what is "acceptable" and what is "not acceptable" in the breed.

People need to appreciate the breed for the kind of dog it is, without wanting to change it. There is no need to fix what is not broken. Does this clarify?

I second what jikjak says. I'm willing to lend a hand any way i can. I feel in love with the shikoku for what they are and would never want to change that. It would be the same thing I feel in love with.

I totally understand. A strong breed club sets the standards for your breed. This is exciting work you are doing for the shikoku.
