Rawhide chews

My Orion likes to chew on rawhide chewies...I have a few different kinds...a few bone type and some spiral or rolled type. I gave him one of the spiral ones the other night and within about 2 hours he had eaten over half of it. I just want to know how much they can eat before it can become a problem. I know things like rawhide can not be digested but will it pass with other foods? I don't want to give him too much and cause stomach problems.

I started Mylie on Nylabone Healthy Edibles, you can get digestible ones and she seems to like them much better than her rawhide bones. She has completely forgotten about her rawhide toy, and prefers the nylabone, maybe this is a healthy alternative?

my Tsuki was passing whole chunks of rawhide at a point, so we no longer give them to the dogs, we give them veggie-hides, which are dehydrated veggie (sweet potato) chews. We were giving nylabones but I really didn't like the staining and issues the pups had digesting them sometimes, so really we don't do much hide now except the veggie chews.

News ate a foot long raw hide in five mintues once. We had to make him vomit it up or it would have been a foreign body for sure. I buy raw soup bones or those pressed cattle bones from the pet store sometimes. I don't buy chew toys that they can actually eat anymore, too much of a risk.
I have seen a dog come in with what looked like a soup bone completely lodged over it's lower jaw. And I've seen many a dog come in for choking on a raw hide, and dogs that needed surgeries for greenies that wouldn't pass through their intestines.
I think the key is supervising the dog while he's chewing on any treat or toy and moderation. If I gave rawhides, it would be no more than one every week per dog I guess.

you know what they've really gotten to like recently??
    dehydrated rabbit ears.
they actually take their time eating them at really enjoy it. Plus they are also a good source of Vitamin B6 and Phosphorus, and a very good source of Protein, Niacin, Vitamin B12 and Selenium.

I've heard too many awful things about Rawhide to even let my dogs near it.

A petition has been started on Petition Spot to Ban Rawhide because 'Rawhide and pigs ears can both cause dangerous complications such as choking, severe vomiting & diarrhea, acute pancreatis, arsenic poisoning, and salmonella poisoning'.

Here's a story from on pet owner:
Well on Oct. 28, 2007 I had to get my most loyal and loving BlackJack put
to sleep because she was so sick and dying...I still can't believe she's gone forever. My baby was only about 3yrs old...I will not let go what happened and I want my voice to be heard !!!!! I purchased some rawhide bones from the 24hr Walgreens on Main St. here in High Point, N.C. when I gave my dog one within an hour of chewing half of the bone my BlackJack became sick, vomiting very badly...this went on for a few days and she seemed to get better or so I thought, I noticed her gums, tongue, skin, and white of her eyes was yellow...I was like no way, my dog has jaundice so I took her to the vet. They kept her for 3 days and done blood tests, X-ray, IV's, Etc. and they ruled out blood disease, foreign objects, any kind of blockage, and said my dog was way too healthy & had very good bloodwork prior to get this sick, this fast!! They sent her home with me and wanted to try medication...but nothing worked she just got sick more each day until she could barely walk & would not eat, she was suffering and the outlook didn't look good even with surgery as weak as she was...It was like she had been poisened, even the vet that put her to sleep said that...and she had from that bone. I want some justice for the life of my bestfriend, she was the kind of dog that if your lucky you might run into one once in your lifetime. Now take note on the information below:

I give my dogs C.E.T chews, they only can be sold by vets, (you can get them from some online retialers as well), I give my dogs one each every so often, but I dont recomend giving it to them all the time. I always watch them when I give them the chews because you can never know what can happen. For the most par I have had no problems with them eatting them.

Also I feed my dogs merrick treats, they cost more, but they are holistic and my dogs love their chews, they have puffed cow tails, beef chews, lamb bites, bones, etc.
