Music and my Shiba

edited July 2008 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
I'm not sure what to do ...

Keiko is 9 weeks old, and I'm trying to get her used to everything she would encounter in our daily lives. I play the flute, and she either HATES it or is SO intrigued by it that she won't let it go.

I've tried sooo many things.

First, I played for her while she was out and about ... and all she would do is bark and howl - I still don't know if the howling was angry or in response.

Second, I let her sit on my lap while I played... she seemed to really enjoy it and was just watching my fingers on the instrument - not a sound made!!! (VERY hard to play with a pup on your lap though!!!!)

Third, I played while she had access to being right near the flute while it was making the sounds - same growling/howling went on... she even tried to attack it (I had anticipated that so I would only use my very very very inexpensive instrument!)

I REALLY don't know if she loves it or hates it!!! At first I thought it was the cutest thing I'd seen, but... I need to practice and I can't have a fuzzball on my lap lol!

If anyone has suggestions lemme know :o)

I might try to post a video later of her while I play, but it will be on the $100 flute since I won't agree to let any animal near anything worth playing :o)

At 9 weeks old, everything is new to Keiko and everything needs to be explored. She probably isn't even sure what she thinks of it. First off it looks kind of like abig stick, fun to chew on right? But then it makes odd noises, possibly kind of scary or intimidating for a pup. Then you add in that while you play the flute your fingers are kind of dancing across it, fun to chase, looks very much like a game, that could be confusing also.

My suggestion would be to play the flute while she is in her crate. You can put her in the crate with a toy, or maybe a kong filled with a small amount of peanut butter or peanut butter mixed with yogurt (freeze it and it lasts longer), while she is snacking, playing, or sleeping in her crate you can practice. She will be out of your way and she will associate the noise of the flute with good things a yummy snack or toy, and her crate.

If for some reason you don't have a crate, go get one, it will be your best friend and your dog's best friend at the same time.

I agree with Brandon. I also play the flute, and have two Shibas. Bella is almost 3 and Nola is 10 weeks. With Bella, she pays no mind, but Nola gets a little freaked out by the strange noises. But, if I put her in her crate with a Nylabone, she is quite and pays no mind. I am sure once she gets older, she will also pay it no mind if left out of her crate.

Hopefully this helps! I know there is nothing more annoying than trying to practice, and having a howling little furball distracting you!

Oh yea, puppies! They need to get used to everything including the music in their lives! I agree with the suggestions on the crate and the treat. I'm sure you and she will learn to "make beautiful music together" as time goes one. I'd love to see the video if you are able to make one, to hear the music and to see the doggie reacting and enjoying it!

    Take care and good luck!

How adorable <3~! I also agree with giving her a treat whenever you get ready to play. Let her associate flute = treat. Eventually she should start getting use to the flute & you wont need to feed treats any more.

I've seen this method used for introducing new dogs & people to shy dogs and every time I've seen it it works...

    Good luck! :)~

Playing for her while in the crate was a great idea... but it only works when she's occupied - ie she has a 'special' chewy treat.

I did get lucky with crate training though - as soon as we put the crate on the floor with a blanket in it she hopped right in, curled up and went to sleep; didn't even make a peep when she woke up and the door was closed, just found her favorite blue toy. She loves her crate :o)

Still trying to get video, hard to do when you're playing at the same time ;o)

Aww! She is super cute! And I am glad putting her in the crate worked for you! Eventually you will not have to give her a chewy treat. I hope that eventually comes soon with Nola... I like to play a lot, and Nylabones are kind of expensive! :)

Ok... here's a really short/crappy video I shot with my cell phone today (it was between my knees lol!) - the sound is kinda crappy, and at the end Keiko started licking my shin :o)

This video (also from my cell) is after I was in the kitchen for 30 seconds... she HATES when she can see me but not get to me (unless she's in her crate - then it's just fine).

Such a cute baby --- wow! Fantastic flute-playing, phone-juggling, doggie-barking, movie-making -- you are one talented multi-tasker! Enjoyed it very much, and looking forward to the next in the series of pics and videos, and watching that baby grow up!

    Thanks for sharing! Take care---

Excellent multi-tasking! And it looks like Keiko is doing a lot better with the flute playing! She only joined in at the end! :) Super cute!
