My 11 mo old Shikoku Inu Kuma practicing his obedience. He really seems to like doing it - although in this video he made a few mistakes, he is really willing and happy!
Thanks guys! I am very pleased with how he is training - and Jessica, you are right, Shikoku are super smart and seem like sponges for learning. Plus it helps that at least my Shikoku is a real pleaser in attitude.
He does really enjoy obedience - sometimes if I am just walking thru the yard, he comes up and just offers healing at my side. I guess he loves it because I always try to make it fun (and short - with periods of play in between).
Now if I could get him that good away at dog training classes or matches. Sometimes he is very good (ie, looking up at me like in the video) but other times he keeps his nose to the ground and still does pretty darn good obedience, but with the nose always sniffing. I guess he can multitask ;-) when he is away from home.
Thanks for the compliments on his looks too - he is a pretty boy - I just wish he was a bit larger in size ;-). He has the coolest face markings now and has darkened considerably around his stop and eyes. He has a really neat "diamond" pattern at the top of his stop.
Kris he looks awsome!! Did you tell him to down when you walked away and called him to come that last time? I can't believe he's only 11 months and that good, you have done an excellent job with him. He stood very well for you and had almost perfect eye contact. He's cute when he sits, he wants to be out slightly in front of you ready for the next command, Kohji does that too.
Kelly - yes I did tell him to down. It is a formal obedience skill that is called "drop on recall".
They are supposed to drop immediately (he was a few steps delayed) and then come again when you call. It is hard to teach (and was with Kuma too) because at first they rush through and don't do the down quickly or then they begin to anticipate and slow up (sometimes downing on their own without a command). So I have to mix it up between a regular recall (w/ no down) and a down on recall so that he always come running quickly but then downs immediately on command (without anticipating) or without forging throught the command.
And yes, he was forging a bit in front with the sits. I had just practiced with him earlier in the day (w/o food) and I made the mistake of having treats in my pocket when I videod. He actually is much better without the treats (no mistakes at all) but with the treats he was just too excited and forged ahead and made a few other mistakes too. :-)
But he is still a puppy - so I am very pleased with him!
Excellent. I love seeing obedience work. Recall and positioning was perfect! I want to hug my Shikoku, but I can't I left him at home -gasps-! <--- is house/animal sitting for a friend ---> I probably won't see him again until Thursday -frowns-.
That was a very good routine, he responds well. Have you tried Tracking with him, yet?

Kuma is a great looking dog too.
I am blown away at how quick they learn. She learned down in a matter of seconds.
Kuma is doing great. And I am with Brandon, he is one handsome boy.
And he is just beautiful, you must be so proud!
GREAT WORK (to Kuma and Kris)!
He really is handsome too, we have not seen any Kuma spam in a while! His coat looks really nice.
