I'm no expert, but Kona seems to be the best at it so far. he actually seems like he's enjoying it. :-)

Good luck with all this show ring business. I remember the TV show "Show Dog Moms an Dads" it's competitive out there, and expensive.

I love Kona licking his face.

and you should totally rent "best in show" (the chris guest movie)... about dog show people

I think your wife may be the cutest person who has ever lived...as if you didn't already know that.

And while your stories about Konas hi jinks have certainly confirmed that I do not nor will likely ever want a Kai Ken I will never ever get tired of his smooshy little face! Since Kai and Shikoku are not recognized breeds in the U.S. are you planning on showing in Canada mostly? Or doing some of the other dog club shows?

Well, they all look beautiful! I think Loa could finish too, no?

where will you be showing them? and how does that work - should each bloodline have at least one champion in it?

First, let me just be 100% clear, I *HATE* dog shows and the show ring. It's not my scene at all. Jen's not so stoked about it either. I think it is pageantry and fluff - so lame. I would rather see a dog working any day over it being pranced around in some soft pageant.

    Anyway...

Having said that, we feel we need to show our dogs to build some credibility in certain networks. We will show Loa and Kona and maybe Lani in UKC. We may show Fuji in AKC since she has a type that may do ok in the AKC. It would be our goal to finish one of each breed.

Loa is the one that seems to take to showing most naturally. Kona thrashes about like a freak but when he does it right he looks really good.

Lani seems kinda dead when she's being shown... she needs some life. Fuji just has no idea what she is doing, but she is super young.

Kona and Loa I feel confident could finish. Kona will require the most work since he is so wild animal style, but the UKC recently reviewed the Kai-Ken standard and now allows for some "wildness" in the breed when showing.

Oh and Jessica, thanx! IMO she is the cutest! :o)

Jen - As for where, we are working on that. It will depend on how fast we can get them up to speed.

For a first, or a start, I'd say they're doing well. I'm with you on the dog show thing. I like seeing the dogs, I just don't like the whole "politics" thing. But, if I have my facts right, it can get far worse there than here.
The thing is what you said, to get some credibility, you need to show them.
Same thing will happen to Kuma, he will appear in a few shows a year, but not much more than that.

Kona looks ready to go.....your pups look great.

Actually, you can show in the US Jessica. Both UKC and the NAKC (formerly Rarities) will take Shikoku. Peggy has shown her Shikoku at both UKC and Rarities/NAKC. I did take my Kuma to a NAKC show in March. He was 3rd in Group (Northern Breeds) and 2nd in Group. In the Group classes there were 4 dogs (so 4 different breeds, with the Shikoku being the most rare). He did better underneath the European judge (ie, 2nd in Group) because this judge was exposed to Shikoku in Europe (he told me so). Whereas the US judge basically told me as I entered the breed ring that he have never seen a Shikoku and he rushed to read the breed standard right as I entered.

Brad, your guys are starting to do good. Just be aware that once you get to the ring, all bets are off. Kuma looked like Loa at home, but in the ring, he was so distracted by all the sites and smells that he would NOT look perky and show his "pretty face". He did gait well and stood well (ie, leg placement) but was not perking his ears and no amount of yummy food got his attention (completely lost all food motivation).

PS. I found the dog show boring personally. I love horse showing but didn't like dog showing too much.

I admit Kris, I didn't realize UKC was American or NAKC.

    Learned something new :)
