Anyone know why...

Shiba's look so big in pictures? I dont get it. Even people who meet Niko and know what a shiba is always say that they thought they were bigger. Chad and I thought so too. Some dogs you can get an accurate idea on their size but not shiba's.
Why??
Is it just me??

Not just you....maybe it's their stance.

I've been wondering the same thing... lil Keiko is still teeny to me (only 6lbs and some change), but every picture I send to my mom she says "wow she got huge fast!!!" ... she'll never be 'huge' so it's kinda wierd.

I think shiba's come in different sizes too depending on their blood lines and what not. Keira is only about 20lbs at the most but she is very short and stubby, even for a girl. I also think their coats might have to do with it too. Also after they blow their coats they tend to look very smooth and might make them look taller and leaner maybe? I feel the same way tho. I was kind of disappointed after seeing keiras mother at the kennel when I picked her up thinking she would get that big and she didn't, but its okay I still love her pint size and all.

They look so big in pictures for a very simple reason, they are proportioned like large dogs. If you examine their body type in comparison to other dogs of the same size they differ dramatically. Especially leg length in relation to body length. Most dogs that weight have MUCH shorter legs and stockier bodies.

Trust me, having a black and tan, I regularly am asked how such a HUGE dog like Moto gets along with my pit bull. When I tell people that he is half her size they don't believe me. Everyone assumes he is some sort of shepherd/husky mix. Then they meet him and are shocked, AND in love.

ya when I was "pitching" the shiba to my mom I pulled up some pics and she was scared at first cause she didn't want a Big dog but I told here they don't get big they just look big in pictures, then I got roxy's breeder to send me some pics of shibas next to people so my mom could get an idea of how big they really were and after that we desided to get a shiba and we got roxy who I think is still and has alway been really skinny and she doesn't have a fluffy tail never really did ethier : ( i hope she fluffs up soon.

OK, im glad im not crazy (about this at least).
Jessica-that totally makes sense now that I think about it. Small and toy dogs LOOK like it because their body proportions. Whenever someone knows what a shiba is but never has seen one in person before say how little they are compared to what they thought.

haha I agree completely with jessica. They are proportioned in the way big dogs are and don't have the "toy" features of most smaller breeds. I think a lot of it also has to do with their stance.

But they look tiny when they're standing next to people :O!

I always think Shibas look just like mini-akitas :)~

There are 2 types of Shibas in Japan. One from Mountain region and one from Plains. Shibas fro Mountain regions are more sturdy, big in general with more coarse coat whereas Shibas from Plains tend to be smaller and more royal in appearance. So there is a large variation in height/weight of shibas. Weight can vary from 18-19 lbs all the way upto 40-45 lbs.

This info is from a book I read sometime back. I forget the book name

My Shiba is about 25lbs at 6months.
