My friends adopted an Akita!

edited August 2008 in Akita (秋田犬)
This past weekend my friends from St. Paul, MN adopted a two year old Akita from the local humane soceity. They named him Kayden and he is a pretty large boy weighing in at 97lbs.

He was at the shelter because his last owners were tired of him escaping. They had a great weekend with him and then on Monday he escaped out of the garage. He has some seperation anxiety issues and so they thought they would give him the space of the garage while they were gone, somehow he got out, I haven't heard how yet. They had to pick him up from the humane society. Yesterday apparently went a lot better.

I talked to my buddy Jens on the phone and they are dedicated to doing right by Kayden and trying to fix his anxiety issues. I recommend possibly DAP diffusers and a behavorist, they were open to anything. So far he has been great with new people that he has met, and dogs that he has been introduced too on leash. Also he has not tried to kill their cats.

I invited them to join the forum, but I'm not sure how into messageboards they are though. I'm excited for them, it is their first dog.

Here is Kayden:

Aww he looks great and so sweet! There's a ton of information on separation anxiety on the net.

He has such a sweet face - look at those eyes in the first pic. :o)

That's awesome they adopted him! I like the name they picked out too. :o)

I think a DAP plugin is a really good idea. Also some bones or chews to keep him busy - Akita really don't like to be w/o their owners. Maybe Melatonin too? [seems to help Lani and Maui both with different issues]

I suggested Melatonin also. They said that he has little to no interest in bones or toys, so those wont do much to pacify him. Maybe they could try a food stuffed kong or tug-jug for when they first leave. I'll have to mention that to them.

    Um, how about a crate?
    Beautiful baby!

I thought of a crate also, which I am not sure they have tried. I do worry though that if he feels stuck in a crate he might try to destroy it and possibly hurt himself by chewing on plastic or metal.

I believe they are having him stay in their mudroom while they are gone now, with destructible products removed. That way he is safely contained, unless he eats through a door or drywall.

escape? surely its not hard to prevent that by keeping him in the house? I understand jumping fences and stuff, but is he able to escape when inside the house?

He managed to get out of a garage. I know another guy whose Akita jumped through the screen of a second story window to get outside.

Wow, he's got the greatest expression on his face. I can't believe anybody would give up on him. :-(

I've got nothing to suggest that hasn't been mentioned yet, so I'm just going to wish them all the best and congrats on their new family member. Please do encourage them to join the forum if only to spam us every once in a while. :-)

Awww he is adorable! Good luck to your friends and Kayden. I hope they figure out a way to keep him enclosed and safe. How the hell do you get out of a garage? Smart Akita!

I wish them loads of happy times together!

We had a dog at the shelter who chewed his way through two layers of sheet rock to get out of the house. I believe Rakka chewed through a wooden door to get out of the guest room when Heidi first got her. A determined dog is capable of anything.

I am thrilled to hear that they are dedicated to making it work with him. He has a beautiful face. Send them my well wishes please. We need more owners like them in the world.

Thank you all so much for your well wishes, Kayden is a great dog and we really love having him as a part of the family, he is doing a lot better now that he realizes we come back and take care of him every day. As to how he got out of the garage here's the deal; the mud room we were keeping him has a standard size doggy door that access's a dog run which runs the length of one side of our house, this door is protected by sliding piece of plywood that protects the opening from allowing critters and other some such nefarious creatures from the interior of the house, now conventional wisdom would dictate that a 97 pound full grown dog would not fit through a standard doggy door conventional wisdom would also suggest that opposable thumbs would be necessary to slide a piece of plywood out of the way, conventional wisdom was wholly wrong. Kayden used his nose to slide the plywood out of the way then proceeded to make a 90 degree turn that would have impressed a zamboni and used his aforementioned nose to open the latch on the dog run door, he then ran around the house to the 6'x10' fence I had installed to complete our fully fenced yard, it did not stand a chance, he knocked it clean off its hinges, then it was off to the races, I know that this may have put off some other potential family members, quite frankly who doesn’t want a dog that can do that? Just think of what he can do with training. Thank you all for all your support we will keep you updated

That to me sounds like a brilliant dog! And I again, am THRILLED that you guys have found each other and are great enough people to a)appreciate that in spite of how scary that may have been it does indeed prove how smart and resourceful you new family member is(even without thumbs!). and b) that we are luckey enough to have a new member to the forum who can retell this tale is such an entertaining manner!

Again WELCOME!!! Really glad to have you guys here.

Congrats. He's a beautiful baby. Separation Anxiety is part of the package wit this breed. So, what have you done to keep him securely in the house?
