Freaking Ahi! Ugh!!!!!!!

Ahi hurt on of her feet again. This time it's her front right paw. Of course she will not let us look at it without having a fit and snapping. So she is off to the vet in a few minutes. I'll keep you guys posted...

----

How is it that our dogs have had 5 months of time playing in the yard, full-throttle, and have not hurt themselves - yet Ahi has had "yard freedom" for less than 1 month and has hurt herself 2 times already?

She is so out of control and wild animal style when she is hurt and we try to help. Jen is afraid we will traumatize her if we force her to let us look at her foot [like I hold her and Jen examines, maybe even using a muzzle]... But my argument is, she freaking traumatizes us with her Cujo-style "I'm gonna eat you face" attitude when we try to help her. I don't have much sympathy for her when she is like that.

Ahi is really a difficult animal to live with.

Shit Brad. She is really testing you guys. I think you need to tell her there are other ways to ensure her mommy and daddy are fully committed to her. ;-)

I'm really sorry to hear that. I suspect she's just making up for lost time. And maybe even still favoring her rear a bit so she's not 100% in balance. Combine that with pent up energy and Ahi's...well...Ahiness and you've got a recipe for an injury.

Keep us updated. I hope its nothing other than a minor scrape or something like that.

If she is that crazy towards you guys, is there much that the vet will be able to do to help her out?

Is it possible it could be something as small as a pebble stuck between her pads, and she is just being a major drama queen?

Rakka is the same way when we clip her nails, and after being bitten (not hard enough to break skin, but I did get nasty bruises) I just went ahead and bought a muzzle. I love my dogs, but no way am I getting bitten.

I honestly think it is a pebble or something, as Brandon said... but its not Ahi's style to show pain. So that is why we are a bit concerned.

The vet will sedate her to take xrays - that is how they can work with her.

Best of luck at the vet. It sucks that she needs to be sedated for it, but Nemo would too. No way he would ever lay still for an x-ray, the sun would implode before that would happen.

From my experience with dogs, when it's something minor, they scream like crazy. When it's a serious injury they get super stoic.

hmmm... that is some very helpful insight, makes total sense. Thanx Brandon!

Looking back I think you are totally right.

Awww, Poor Ahi :( I hope it's nothing big Brad.

I think Brandon's right as well, I think the fact they try to hide major problems goes back to their primitive instincts :o~

So Ahi is back from her appointment - they couldn't find anything wrong with her. They think she may have twisted her elbow or bruised her pad.

The told us to keep her separated and inactive for 3 days and giver her aspirin. :o\

Uh oh... Maybe Ms. Ahi is turning into a hypochondriac??? Can dogs do that?

Anyway, I am glad that there seems to be nothing wrong! But I know it stinks that she is being a bit of a drama queen.

Is it possible you have anytype of ground dwelling bees around your place? Just trying to think of things, but my guess is that it was pebble stuck in her bads. Nemo has flipped over on his back and screamed when sidewalk salt got stuck in his pads.
  • edited November -1
if there were bees, wouldn't the odds be in the favor of at least one other dog besides Ahi finding them??!

Phew, that's a relief. I'm glad there's nothing serious wrong with her. I hope she decides she fine really quickly!

Psssst. Ahi. Yeah, you. Stop being a brat! :-P

Oh man...crazy Ahi Monster! Im glad its nothing serious...keep us updated on the girl.

    Thanx all. :o)

I'm glad its not serious too, but I wish we know more than what they told us... I mean, we know now as much as we knew before we took her.

Brandon - We have fire ants, and cactus that she could step on - no ground bees. It rained a lot on Tuesday, so I think she may have gotten some mus and rocks stuck in her paw then got crazy with the dogs and ended up bruising her pad or something.

She has been in her crate for a while while the other have been running around outside - so the others already know what things hurt if you step on them and have built up thicker, tougher, pads.

it's gotta be really frustrating when you take a dog to the vet ($$$) and then find that they know no more then you about what is ailing your dog and all they can recommend is aspirin. Poor Ahi she has been separated so much already. How is Ahi about having her nails clipped? Maybe you are right and it is a pebble or something very minor. Brandon is right on about dogs being stoic when it is a serious incident and being babies when it is something minor, i.e. a pebble among the pads.

Ahi is sooooo lucky to have you two as her parents.

Ahi is horrible about getting her nails trimmed - we have tried everything, she is just not ok w/ us doing that to her.

I should video tape it so you guys see how ridiculous she is - she down right abusive.

Bah Ahi stop hurting yourself! Glad it's probably just a bruise and nothing too serious though.
  • edited November -1
Brad - must run in the family. When it's nail-clipping time, you'd think Rakka was a rabid wolf, not the domesticated shika we know and love.

Poor Ahi, finally got some freedom only to have it taken away again :o

    At least she's ok! <3~

Ah, poor Ahi. Sorry she is such a handful.

Kuma doesn't like his nails trimmed much either, but he still stands nicely for it and doesn't try any aggressive moves to me. But if he sees the nail clippers in advance of me catching him, he runs and hides.

Brad, how is Loa, does she react to things like Ahi?
  • edited November -1
Loa doesn't like to have her nails cute either, but she will allow it to be done - just need treats, love, and a skillfully quick clipper [aka Jen]. She is WAY better than Ahi.

Ahi and Loa are very much night and day.

Ahi has such intensity, she is relentless in her pursuit of 'play' with the other dogs. What a character.
