Taos SAR

edited August 2008 in Akita (秋田犬)
I have decided to join the Taos SAR! I'm stoked about it, I have been thinking about doing this for a while and I have decided that I will officially apply for membership in January.

Its neat because our vet here in town is the president of the organization, so I can chat with her about it.

My hope is to eventually move into the K9 SAR program and train one of our Akita to be a SAR dog.

Does anyone have any resources or recommended book on doing SAR training with your dog?

    That's very cool!
I was thinking what it would take to train SAR with Kuma, I think that Akitas can be good at it. Could find much about it yet.

Very cool. Sounds like a fun thing to do with some free time. I'm sure whichever dog you choose will enjoy it.

Cool, never seen an Akita SAR b4. Have seen quite a few Kai over here tho.
I'm planning on training my Kai for SAR when I get her.

Cool it looks like fun! I Don't know any SAR specific books but I think a good start is foundation work via the clicker and Karen Pryor.

Here is a book that might help is some capacity.
Fun Nosework for Dogs by Roy Hunter.

Know that not all organizations embrace primitive breeds and many think that one training technique/style applies to all. You may have to do things a bit differently when working/training indpendents vs. a lab. Don't let naysayers tell you that it can't be done. Be prepared there will be some in every club.

which dog (s) do you have in mind? I think the primitive breeds would be exceptional at this!
This is a really cool idea, I am interested in following what happens!!

Wow, Brad, that is so cool!!! Skella is trying out for the SAR team this fall, so if all goes well, we can internet SAR buddies (whatever that means, lol). This is soooo cool!

For interest's sake, I'll tell you guys about trying out for SAR with Tojo. The evaluators said he did very well and was a real possibility, but ultimately didn't choose him because he wouldn't go through a bush to get to me for the test to see if he would come and find me. He stood on the other side of the bush and screamed at me to come out, but wouldn't come to me. They thought he was afraid to go through the bush, but I knew it was a case of him saying, "No, YOU come to ME!" when I called him. Either way, I'm trying with Skella and I think she'd be better at it anyway. I was going to try with Rakka, but she's too dog aggressive. I would like to do it with a shikoku someday, though. I truly believe they have the talent.

Thanx for the support and feedback all! :o)

Jen - I will probably focus on Kahuna, our future Akita male. I *might* try Fuji too, but she is not super willing to please relative to our other Akita. My main focus will be on Kahuna tho, since he will be the youngest and will be our main male Akita [stud]. I have toyed with the idea of trying it with our LGD - but that would be just a side project, my main focus will be on the Akita and I think I will have my hands full with the anyway. :o)

Heidi - That's awesome! It will be nice to have someone to use as a "support group". Keep us posted on how Skella does.

Shigeru - Funny, I had not even considered trying it with Kona... hmmm... Tho I am focusing on him being a solid pack dog, he seems to enjoy it too.

Patrice - Thanx for the book lead - I'll check it out. It's nice to heard from you too! :o)

I would really like to focus on winter avalanche rescue sine all our dogs seem to love the snow - and I prefer the snow too.

Looks like so much fun! & you get to help find people do.

I can't wait til you get Kahuna Brad! I'd love to see spam from him, particularly tripped out in SAR gear if they have any :p~

Yeah, Brad. I'm sure the whole pack would love to be out in the snow.

Any idea when your LGD will be arriving?

Holy moly, I was browsing through the website and it sounds intense. That lady who called 911 for help and then didn't tell anyone that she got help without them would've pissed me off though. All those volunteers searching for hours for someone who was at home sleeping in bed.

    Hey Brad:

I asked a friend of mine that works with assistance and service dogs and she suggested looking into www.sardog.org and checking out jonnijoyce.com. Also www.ardainc.org and csar.org for an overview. There is a supply place called expedition outfitters online. They have equipment for sledding, carting and scooters so I would think they would have something for tracking. I think some of harness items are available there and they have a link to other activities too.

Thanx so much for the URLs and info Patrice!

Rina - Yea, the Taos SAR program is pretty hardcore, I will have to be involved for a while before I can even be a member, then I'll have to be a member for a while before I can do anything with dogs... THEN I have to work with other dog teams before I can even suggest using/training my dog. That is why I plan to focus on Kahuna, since he is only 2 months old now.

Shigeru - Our LGD will be born next month, and we hope to pick her up in December on our way to Atlanta to see our family [December 18th or so].
