Coat blowing

edited September 2008 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
Toby started blowing his coat a few weeks ago, and well ... I came home today for the first time in a couple of weeks. I noticed that Toby seems much thinner, but this time I also noticed that his hind legs are very dry, thin and brittle, similar to what other Shiba owners keep speaking of.

Could this be linked to his coat blowing? :( I noticed he was chewing his hind leg a little tonight, and my parents didn't even notice at all. I'm a little concerned.

He also has a thin patch on his stomach, and his shoulder/front legs kinda area, too.

I got a few photos to post in a few minutes, but I don't know if they'll show how thin his legs got. :0

Here, on his hind legs ... it doesn't show the stomach/and front legs as much in this one.

On this one, it kinda shows how his stomach hair is thinning. You can see the pink of his stomach, and theres also pink at his chest.

    He just looks soo thin!

I'll try to take more pictures today, with better lighting.

That looks like the same pattern of thinning hair that Ninja had before he started blowing his coat in earnest. (If I recall correctly from Romi's photos that is).

Toby was chewing at it a little, hence my concern. If it is linked to the coat blowing, I will feel so much better! :)

It looks very similar to my 10 month old Takumi about a month ago.... thining hair around his shoulder and stomach area, dry hair and chewing the legs. I never thought it was because of his coat blowing. Maybe it was..... but the vet diagnosed him as skin problem. Please see my posting in this forum titled Shiba itching started by kitacream.

Toby ... doesn't have mites or fleas. We've been very consistent with his K9 Advantix monthly. So i'm not sure how he could get any? :(

every dog have a natural amount of mites. these are transmitted mom to puppy. let me look for an article for you.

"All dogs raised normally by their mothers possess this mite as mites are transferred from mother to pup via cuddling during the first few days of life. Most dogs live in harmony with their mites, never suffering any consequences from being parasitized. If, however, conditions change to upset the natural equilibrium (such as some kind of suppression of the dog's immune system), the Demodex mites may "gain the upper hand." The mites proliferate and can cause serious skin disease."

"Classically Demodex mites have been felt to only be transferable from mother to newborn pup. After the pup is a week or so old, it has developed enough immunity so that infection is no longer possible. In other words, after age one week or so, a dog will not longer accept new mites on its body."

"Mites live inside hair follicles -- a difficult place for miticides (chemicals that kill mites) to reach."

"Mites are a normal residents of dog skin; it is only in some individual dogs that mites cause problems."

I would not be concerned at all. It looks like what Moto looks like when he is blowing his coat. And he chews when he blows too.
