Nice Brandon...makes my quote seem pretty crappy. :-P

This is my fav: "Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace."

There are plenty more out there to dig up if you want them. You could have a post that looks just like that. I think the Portuguese proverb might be my favorite, people who don't have a cat or dog always have me suspicious.

I posted a part of this a while back, but here goes the full thing

    "Near this spot
Are deposited the Remains of one
    Who possessed Beauty
    Without Vanity,
    Strength without Insolence,
    Courage without Ferocity,
And all the Virtues of Man
    Without his Vices.
This Praise, which would be unmeaning flattery
    If inscribed over Human Ashes,
Is but a just tribute to the Memory of "Boatswain," a Dog
    Who was born at Newfoundland,
    May, 1803,
    And died at Newstead Abbey
    Nov. 18, 1808."

    - Lord Byron

Beats me, it's popular knowledge! Like all popular knowledge it's easy to remember and sometimes hard to explain.

    I lie belly-up
    In the sunshine, happier than
    You ever will be.

    Today I sniffed
Many dog butts — I celebrate
    By kissing your face.

    I sound the alarm!
Paperboy — come to kill us all —
    Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!

    I sound the alarm!
Garbage man — come to kill us all —
    Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!

    I lift my leg and
Whiz on each bush. Hello, Spot —
    Sniff this and weep.

I Hate my choke chain —
Look, world, they strangle me! Ack
    Ack Ack Ack Ack Ack!

    Sleeping here, my chin
On your foot — no greater bliss — well,
    Maybe catching cats.

    Look in my eyes and
    Deny it. No human could
Love you as much I do.

'Tis sweet to hear the watch dog's honest bark
    Bay deep-mouthed welcome as we draw near home;
'tis sweet to know there is an eye will mark
Our coming and look brighter when we come.

    Lord Byron

With eye upraised his master's look to scan,
The joy, the solace, and the aid of man:
The rich man's guardian and the poor man's friend,
The only creature faithful to the end.

    George Crabbe

    Thorns may hurt you, men desert you, sunlight turn to fog;
but you're never friendless ever, if you have a dog.

    Douglas Mallock

I explained it to St. Peter,
    I'd rather stay here
    Outside the pearly gate.
    I won't be a nuisance,
I won't even bark, I'll be very patient and wait,
I'll be here, chewing on a celestial bone,
No matter how long you may be.
I'd miss you so much, if I went in alone,
It wouldn't be heaven for me.
