Met with Mr. Dave Roberts last night~

edited September 2008 in General
Dave came to CA a couple days ago. So we planned to get some dinner and drinks. John and I drove to his hotel in Marina Del Rey around 7pm to pick him up and headed out to a restaurant that was pretty close by...it was an italian spot. The food was very good! And there was a time when they would play a song and hand out lyrics for everyone to sing and all the waiters and waitresses would come and toast. It was fun!

We walked down the street and saw a little bar so we went in. I think we were on the border of Venice Beach and Marina Del Rey. While walking to the bar, a guy stopped us. Older, very deep raspy voice, and looked like a bum. He started talking about how he served and how he is getting his pension in 1 month. He then said that today was a very special day that he will never forget...and then looked at me and said "you will especially appreciate it". He started lifting his shirt up and I got a little scared like WTH is going on? Then he lifted it higher and.....HE WAS WEARING A BRA!!! Not just any bra...a heavily padded bra with drawn on nipples!!! It was freaking hilarious! He asked us for money of course, we said we didn't have any cash. We had left over food from the restaurant and just gave him that.

So we get to the bar, order our drinks and start talking...after a couple hours, around 11pm...we see this old bum outside dancing and doing his thang. It was SO FUNNY! This guy was getting down! I have some video of it...ill post it once it uploads. Its so strange and funny.

Anyways, it was a really fun meet. Dave is exactly how I imagined him. It's so weird meeting people online and then them being EXACTLY the same. We got to know eachother outside of our dogs too. So that was really cool. Dave is a very cool guy~ John and I had a awesome time!

*edit* - Dave is a lot taller then I had thought! lol! And unfortunately time didn't allow us to let dave meet Portia and Ninja...but that will be saved for another trip, right???

Here are some people pics.

lol - sounds like a good meet, with some added entertainment from a crazy guy! Cool! :o) Nothing like a crazy guy to help break the ice. LMAO

I'm envious you guys got to hang out - I want to hang out with forum members too. :o(

*I notice Dave had 2 drinks and you only had one... You holding back, Romi? lol :o)

It's great you guys got to meet!
Sounds like a very nice evening, with some burlesque entertainment, hehe!

What the hell is going on in the poster on the top left of the first pic? What kind of place did you take Dave to?

Very observant, Brad. I don't even want to say what I think I'm seeing.

I want to hang out with forum folks! I got to meet Barbara for 30 seconds. Hand her an Akita puppy and bail. :(

I love how John and Dave called and coordinated their shirts for the meet-up --- thought that was a "girl" thing ... JK and LOL...

and Romi: Can't wait to see the video of the street entertainment!

So glad you guys could meet. My husband has made 2-3 very near and dear friends, meeting first on an on-line forum like this and then later meeting in person (well, he and these others are crazy into bio-tech stocks, so meeting at shareholder meetings was just a natural way to get together eventually). I love how the Internet allows us all to expand our "circle" across the nation and the continents!

Having said all that, please let me know when and if anyone ever comes to MN. We are the land of the "Minnesota Nice", you know, so it would be fun to meet you all!

How cool! Hope you guys had fun :D

I second Brad's question...what the hell is up with that poster??? lol~
  • edited November -1
    My thoughts on the poster...

    A. It's a group of pirates who are celebrating a victory with a bag of gold in hand...

    or...

    B. That's MY type of bar *wink*

Well, I'm back in Atlanta. It was a great trip and the big highlight was getting to hang out with Romi and John! They are both exactly as I pictured them too, although Romi is super tiny. :-) That was probably the most pleasant bum interaction I've ever had. He was just a happy go lucky guy (although I'm sure the meth had something to do with it). I wanted to laugh at him soooooooo bad but I figured it was better to hold back in case he took offense. I can't wait for Romi to post the video of the second bum getting down outside the bar.

Anyway, the bar was a mexican themed place. The "poster" was actually a mural that spanned the entire inside. It was a block or two from Venice Beach so it was a mural of people in beach attire. Get your minds out of the gutter. :-P

On a side note, since my flight didn't get in until 11:30, I can't pick up Lucy and Joey until tomorrow. But, Thea's parents had to leave town on a family emergency so after getting home at 12:45, I immediately turned around and drove over to pick up Thea. I love her to death, but she's no substitute for Lucy and Joey. :-/ I just hope they aren't too pissed at me when I get them tomorrow. First, being boarded for the first time and then coming home to Thea in the house. Uggg, I can see Lucy's look of disgust already.

Was this restaurant C&O Trattoria by any chance? I love that place :p
  • edited November -1
hahaha but it's funny to be in the gutter......:)
  • edited November -1
Umm, maybe? Is it a large place with lots of covered patio seating, "on your honor" chianti dispensers, and "awesome rolls"?
  • edited November -1
    Evan - LMAO!

Dave - Glad you made it home safe! Also, thank you for clearing up the poster thing. I guess I believe you. lol

That sux you had to go pick up Thea, but you are a super great friend for doing so. Joey and Lucy will be so stoked to be home they will probably not even notice Thea for a few minutes.

Well, between jet lag and having to take care of Thea this morning, I didn't make it to pick up the pups until 10:45. They were SUUUUUPER excited to see me. Lucy even sang me a little song. It sounded like a wounded bird, but I thought it was sweet of her to try. :-) I took them by pet smart to buy them a new toy on the way home and when we got here, I kept Thea in her crate in the bedroom for 45 minutes so I could have some alone time with Lucy and Joey. I think they appreciated it. Since then, its been ALL play and nothing else. :-)

Sounds like things went pretty well then. :o)

Oh yeah, it went fine. I didn't expect anything else. Joey LOVES Thea and Lucy has spent enough time with her that she doesn't bother to reinforce her dominance anymore. It is pretty funny when Lucy does though. A 16 pound dog bossing around a 90 pound dog is a sight to see. :-)

Lucy rocks! I wish you got a video of that song.

Brad - I am super lightweight! So I usually only have 1 or 2 drinks and im good :) - Romi = Cheap Date!

Dave - I'm not tiny!!! Just Vertically challenged! jk! Lucy is so cute! I'm glad everything went ok and you got home safe!!!

Here is the video of the bum...I was trying to make it seem like I wasn't video-taping him...so...its just a short clip.

  • edited November -1
Hahahaha. That's almost better than I remember it. :-) Thanks for posting it Romi!!!! And sure, we'll go with vertically challenged. ;-)

    ----

Barbara: I wish I had a video of it too! The staff at the boarding place was cracking up. :-) I have a feeling they paid a lot of attention to Lucy and Joey because they fed them almost all of their treats. I think, as usual, they were a hit. :-)

I have always preferred "wee" to describe my petite friends.

And your dancing man is pretty awesome.
  • edited November -1
LOL - That guy rocks! Did he have a cell phone clipped on his pants tho?
  • edited November -1
He was in his own happy place.
  • edited November -1
    That's the place!

The one thing I don't miss about living by Venice are the "entertaining" bums. It gets annoying after a while.
