Shikoku Collar Size

edited September 2008 in Shikoku Ken (四国犬)
I know its a bit early since i dont have my pup yet but i was wondering what size of collar fits on a shikoku. (length in inches)
i saw a couple that i like and i wanted to make sure they fit before i buy one.
if the collar was around 15 inches long would that fit?
i guess id need to know their neck size.
thanks!

I can get you Loa's neck size when she gets home [she is out with Jen, Ahi & Kona]. I really think a 15" collar would work fine tho - Kona wears a 19" collar but he wears it on the 16" hole, I would expect his neck is a little thicker than Loa's - so a 15" would work fine.

thanks for the info!i wanted to make sure before buying one because these collars are pricey. one is $470 and the other is $265.
the collar's stats were 0.8" x 15.3" and the other one says " For dogs measuring 13.3" to 16.5" around the neck". i think thats the same one thats on my shiba now.
are the shikoku and shiba next sizes not too far apart?
so i guess those should both fit on a fully grown shikoku.

My year old male Shikoku wears a collar that measures about 15 to 16 inches. So you should be fine (but they would need to grow into it).

Ok, you HAVE to post a link or pictures of those collars. Are they encrusted with jewels or something? :-)

$470?!?!? Does it walk the dog for you?

    Eee!

Out of curiosity...why invest so much in a collar? It's likely to get dirty, chewed up, beaten up, stretched out, etc. :o

    Just wondering :) ~

    Jen just mesured Loa's neck - it's 17".

    thanks for the measurement!
i guess it could be too small for a shikoku.

the cheaper one is the one thats on my shiba in my hello thread.

the website is all in flash so im not sure how to link it directly but just search for dog and the collars and leashes should pop up.
theres really nothing special about them, you're basically paying for the name. its silly and i know they are going to beat up and chewed on (Emi already did a number on hers over the years) but i love my dogs so i figure that if i can give their purses or wallets as a present to my mom or gf then why not a collar for my pup! its hard not to spoil the ones u love!

Is there any reason why you have to order one right now? Your pup isn't going to come to you full size. :) Puppies go through a lot of collar sizes while they grow. I think you would be best buying some cheap ones for now and getting an expensive one when s/he is full size.

That is what we did. We bought a few less glamorous harnesses to get her through early puppy-dom and now are looking into higher end collars.

no reason, i was just trying to find out if the collars would fit a full grown shikoku. if so then at least it would be safe to get one if i see it in the store. its gonna be for the dog when he/she is full grown so that it can be used for a long time.
i guess im just excited and being on these forums just increases that excitement!

Hey man, I don't blame you for being excited. I was out buying gear for my new puppy before he was even born. It only got worse once I saw the first pictures of him! If you can afford it and its something you want to do, then more power to you. I've got my eye on a $350 set of leashes and collars for my pups. But, alas, the grad student salary I get doesn't enable such niceties at this point. Some day though. :-)

My Nihon Ken run naked most of the time, but my Piglet Belle has a vast array of decorative collars.

I assure you though that you will likely find no shortage of ways to spoil your upcoming baby. I spoil my furry babies by cooking for them instead of feeding dog food, building my schedule around their lives, and a plethora of nylabones for my teething shika!

cool! what kind of leash and collar is it?

    wow thats pretty cool.
what kind of meals do you cook for your dog?
do they end up watching u make their dinners? hehe

I second what Dave & Jessica said :) It'll be a year or more before I get my own pup, but I too have to resist the urge to buy goodies D: ~

BTW does anyone else know their dogs neck size or length of collar on their full grown shikokus?

My shikoku is only 7 months old. So not yet...

Could always ask Katja, God knows she has more than enough Shikoku to give you a good average size ;)~

i did when i was there last weekend but she didnt know exact numbers.
i should have brought a tape measure! hehe
i was too distracted at the time as well to pursue it further.
there were so many shiba and shikoku to check out

I'm SO jealous! I'd love to me Katja & all her pups.

Maybe when I get my shika I'll fly over there...

    ...

or drive. You know, where it's nice...on the ground...~
  • edited November -1
u should! its a nice place and they have lots of room to roam around!
its a 2 hour ferry ride and about 1.5hrs of driving to get there from where i live.
i take it that u are farther away since u mentioned flying, but that way u can meet her and all her pups, and then pick up a pup to bring home with you!

lol Far is an understatement ;)

I am on the opposite corner of our continent; Florida! haha ;) It wouldn't be a prblem, but I am absolutely terrified of flying. Though the prospect of meeting Katja & all her pups might tempt away my fear :) ~
