crate in the sun?

edited October 2008 in General
I just moved some things around in the kitchen so I can put Lucy and Joey's crates infront of the window. I thought they'd enjoy being able to look outside while in their crates. What I didn't think about ahead of time is that during the day the sun shines in the window. I keep going back and forth as to whether or not its something to worry about. Glass is a good UV filter right? I should have to worry about sun burn. But what about overheating? I've set things up so there is a part of the crate that is not in the sun if they want to escape it.

Am I rationalizing this properly? Or is it a bad idea to leave them in the sun for a good portion of the day?

Thanks!

Depends on whether you have AC--- could get a little hot for the furbies... Especially if its the afternoon sun (western exposure). Can you put water in their crate, too, in case of overheating? Sunburn shouldn't be a problem (but some windows probably block the sun and uv better)

Windows do not block UV unless you have specifically bought UV treated windows. This is especially true in cars (it is why most people have more damage on the left side of their faces). How hot does it really get in October? Personally if it is that much of a concern. I would move the crates out of the direct sun light.

I concur with Jess. I don't let Tenji stay in the sun for any length of time.
Koji's (the 13 year old Shikoku) owner told me that he feels Koji's eyesight is poor due to the
time Koji was left out in the sun.(?)

Portia loves to sunbathe - Ninja has recently started doing it too. When I let them out in the daytime, they will do their business and then sprawl out on the concrete and take a nap in the sun. The pen is next to a window, If I don't use the blinds, it gets sun there, which they like. But the other side of the pen doesn't get any sun, so if it does get too hot, they can move. I do use AC though, its on Auto 76 degree's.

i would think it would be alright as long as they have a way to completely get out of the sun as well. i find that my dogs also love to lie out there in the sun and they are actually doing that right now!

Yeah both my dogs enjoy the sun. Sometimes if it is a cool or cold day, I will open the curtains to let the sunlight in on them while they are in their crates. If it is hot/humid or just an "average" day...I normally leave the curtains closed and just let sunlight filter through other windows or doors, so it's not directly on them. They can enjoy direct sunlight when they go outside. This way, they can control how much they want to take in.

Thanks guys, that makes sense. I think I'll keep the blinds mostly closed so they can see out a little but they won't get much, if any, direct sunlight.
