Hungry? Why not try some dish soap?

So tonight, after an incredibly long day at work and a trip to the market, I was preparing to wash the dishes in the dishwasher. Well, after I put the dish soap in the tray, I grabbed a paper towel to wipe off the top (my lovely husband let it get all gunky the last time he used it).

And guess what? During the two and a half seconds I had my back turned, Nola decided dish soap is delicious. It freaked me out. Until I read the back of the label and learned that my dish soap has bleach in it. Then it REALLY freaked me out.

Well, Eric called the E-Vet, and everything should be alright. She only had about three licks before I swept the little devil off her feet. However, we are keeping an eye on her for signs of vomiting or lethargy. She did however get to eat a ton of her favourite treats, ice cubes.

Silly pup. I guess now I know to never leave the dish soap unattended! Silly me, I guess is more like it.

Oh man. Silly Nola. That wasn't very nice of her, giving mommy a heart attack like that. It sounds like she didn't get very much, so fingers crossed she continues to do well. Keep us posted.

This is why I have only non-toxic and biodegradable cleaners! Mostly homemade, too, so I know exactly what's in them.

    Naughty little pup!

Heidi - This might be a strange question...but do the homemade ones work just as well? :) ~

Woah! I'd be nervous too. I hope all is well.

Silly shiba: what's a few grey hairs between friends, right?

Nola did fine through the night. None worse the wear, although I think my life got shortened about 2 weeks last night! I am getting ready to take her out for her morning walk... Wonder if we might see some soap bubbles flying through the air?

All of our other cleaning products are natural, I am not sure why we have dish soap with bleach in it... Oh well, that just means a trip to the natural store! :)

Bleach is safe in small doses. In fact, if you travel around the world, you'll find that many countries (edit: including ours) add bleach to their tap water. The amount of bleach that would likely be in soap is small and not harmful.

Sunyata: Bleach may be used in soap for it's disinfecting and/or sterilizing properties.

Just a suggestion for those using all natural products. Make certain that the products you use will actually help to clean/sterilize your environment and not just make it smell pretty. You don't want bacteria to build up. I personally steer clear from most products and clean with steam as I know it will kill much of what I might encounter in the home. However, in the bathroom, it's bleach for me. And I do use dish washing and washer soap.

I recently got a catalog from Foster's & Smith and it had a bubble machine in there for you to play with you pets. Any thoughts on this?

Barbara, I know that bleach is okay in small doses, but it was the #1 ingredient in the dish soap. That did get me a bit worried. (That and the large amount of sodium in it.) But I am glad to know that if it ever happens in the future, I do not have to have a heart attack! Thanks for the info. :)

I usually try to stay away from anything with bleach in it, because I have very sensitive skin, and bleach does a number on me. Which is why we go for a lot of the natural cleaners and anti-bacterial stuff with alcohol versus bleach.

LJ, Never thought about a bubble machine. But I do have scented bubbles that I blow outside and the pups love to nip and chase them. It is a ton of fun!

We add a tablespoon or two of bleach to a cement pond in the front yard the dogs enjoy drinking out of, they share with squirrels and birds. No problems so far and the water is drinkable.

Osy - yes, they work just as well. Borax is a staple at my place and it cleans practically everything. I use it instead of Ajax (works just as well), put it in the bottom of my garbage pail and diaper pail (absorbs odours, deters flies), add it to really gross laundry, and as an ingredient in my all-purpose spray cleaner. It is anti-bacterial, too!

As for bleach, I use oxygen bleach instead of chlorine bleach. Especially in the diaper laundry (I use cloth diapers).
