Why do my dogs hate me?

Ya know, it seems every time I'm getting ready to leave on a business trip, my dogs like to multiply my stress by a factor of 87. I mentioned in another thread that Joey woke me up Sunday morning by throwing up all over the bed, well Lucy did the same last night. So this morning, I frantically called the vet as soon as they opened to see if they needed to come in for an exam, if I could board them like I've been planning to, or if I needed to phone in a HUGE favor with a friend.

Well, 1:00pm roles around and nothing, so I call back and remind them its urgent I speak with our vet today. 3:15 roles around and still no call back. Finally, I decide just to drive in and pickup a bag of Lucy's food. While I'm there, I plead my case and just ask them to fit me in with whomever is available. I'm amazed I kept so calm, I was cursing and yelling at nobody on the whole drive over there.

I took Lucy and Joey in an hour ago. We had a new vet, we'd never seen before. She was super nice, and Joey responded well to her. The first thing she said to me after I explained the weekend's events was "Man, when I saw two dogs coming in with vomiting symptoms I was hoping they went to daycare so we'd know what it is." She's convinced its a stomach virus since they both looked good on a physical exam.

She sent me home with Flagyl for both of them and some anti-nausea medication to give them as well. Since I'll be boarding them at the same place where they likely picked up the virus, she didn't see a problem with it.

So, to make matters even more complicated. A sequence of three or four mixups between Lucy's specialist and the specialty pharmacy that makes her steroid capsules led to them not having refill authorization until 4:00 today and they closed at 5:00. They told me they wouldn't be able to finish the capsules until a few hours after opening tomorrow and I need to be dropping the pups at the boarding place no later than 30 minutes after they open. So I'm scheming to find a friend who can pickup the drugs and drop them off when what happens? I get a phone call from the pharmacy that one of the staff members volunteered to stay late and finish the capsules so I can pick them up first thing in the morning.

So, crisis averted, I can now focus on getting ready to leave. Wow this has been a STRESSFUL day. :-(

take a breather, man! There are just those days when it piles on, and the dogs seem to know how to increase the stress! Things will probably go quite smoothly tomorrow, you'll see. Relax, enjoy a glass of wine, turn on a movie and get a good night's sleep.

p.s. i'm glad the pups are OK!

The day before leaving always seems to be stressful, yours even more so than normal. That was really cool that the staff member stayed late to help you out.

    Have fun on your trip.

Thanks Osy. I should have remembered the mantra, but it eluded me.

I felt a lot better once I had them in to see the vet. Of course that won't stop me from calling to check up on them tomorrow morning (and probably each morning after that). ;-)

I'm a bit late to this, but I just wanted to wish you a safe trip! I'm sorry your pups are having a hard time - just consider their way of making sure you have your priorities straight. :o)
