Aww...Masha is adorable! I LOVE HER "spiked hair"! Congrats on the new relationship with L! Masha looks so small next to L, but in the pics with Jen holding her, she looked pretty big! It amazes me how big those dogs get!

Wow, so Nihon Ken are really that easy to potty train?

    ---

I'm with Romi, Masha looks big next to you guys, but so tiny next to L! I'm really happy you guys decided to go with her, she's a stunning [ not-so ] little girl! She reminds me a lot of her mum.

Happy to hear Big L is your new friend! All things come with time...but saving someones' life can help quicken things up a tad bit as well ;) ~

That is wonderful Brad! (you and Luytiy)

I love Masha! I love seeing the size difference between her and Luytiy as well. She is such a BIG puppy!

Im gladd Luytiy is coming around to you Brad. Everything takes time, and Im glad you guys were able to have a "revalation", although Im sure jumping into a pool to save him in the middle of winter is not how you wanted to do it!

Wow, that's kind of a terrifying having to pull a hectic dog out of a pool, I'm glad everything turned out well. You and Luytiy seemed to have your come to Jesus moment. I don't know much about the livestock gaurding breeds, are they supposed to be suspicious of new people, or only protective against animal predetors?

Masha is really cute. Soon she will be huge, hopefully by then the potty training is figured out.

The Luytiy (have to check spelling everytime I type it) thing is pretty hectic, and scary! That dog could easily off a human... but I'm glad you've both come to an understanding now - it sounds like he respects you.

    masha is adorable.

For clarification, I didn't actually have to jump in the pool, he was close enough to the edge that I could lie on the ground and just reach him.

    ----

Brandon - Human aggression is typical for Caucasian Ovcharka, the breed was used to guard against all threats [2 and 4 legged]. Some LGDs are more human aggressive than others [like the CO] and some are more dog aggressive [like the Kangal]. We chose a breed that was less dog aggressive since he had to coexists with our other dogs but in doing this we had to accept some human aggression.

Jen - I have to check the spelling of his name every time too... The situation with L was pretty scary, the hardest part was to not react to him. I felt if I showed fear he would then have a learned response and if I got angry [which was my initial response] he would perceived that as aggression and react even more aggressively. So I just stood there and said something to him in a very condescending tone like "Don't be an idiot Luytiy!"... LOL.

    ----

A properly socialized CO should be apprehensive and unsure of humans, constantly watching them, but not quick to attack and mellow in public. If a human approaches their property they should give warning by barking and will increase their tenacity as the human gets closer. If a human enters the property, after being warned tenaciously by the CO, the CO should "roll" the human by flanking to their rear and pushing them to the ground - NOT biting. A bite from a CO [or any LGD] is the VERY LAST measure for the dog. If an LGD actually made contact with every [perceived] threat they had to deal with they would live VERY SHORT lives. COs are praised for their on-the-job judgement, which can be a blessing and a curse.

So, when Luytiy reacted to me he was guarding at the time. Each time it happened Kahuna had just given me a fearful warning bark because he was frightened of something I was doing. The first time I was using the grill at night, the second time I went in the yard at night and picked up some wood that had fallen over, the third time ice in my glass made a sound that startled Kahuna. Each time Kahuna gave a very fearful bark and Luytiy came in to do his job, but didn't touch me - once he realized it was me he stopped. That's an important thing to note.

The first 2 times this happened I was ok with it, since he was doing his job and might not have know it was me due to how dark it was outside. The 3rd time he did it is the time that made me call our behaviorist. The trigger [Kahuna's fear bark] was the same in the 3rd time but the difference was I was inside in the living room with Kahuna and Jen while Luytiy was outside in the yard. When I jiggled my glass of ice Kahuna did his fear bark [in the living room] and Luytiy ran in from the outside and targeted me as the "threat". This means, out of me, all the dogs, and Jen he felt I was the "threat"... that's a bit concerning.

Huna has done his stupid fear bark a few more times since Luytiy and I "bonded" and now Luytiy doesn't even react [toward me]. Also Huna is maturing and is more confident now so he barks less.

In a way I am glad this happened, and I'm certainly glad it was directed at me and not Jen or one of the dogs. It's kinda nice to see the receiving end of him so I know how effective he can be - and I can tell you, he is VERY EFFECTIVE.

so, besides the $400 coat, you also needed some new pants ;)

thats so interesting, his response to a threat to Kahuna, and upon seeing it was you he stopped - the indoors thing would really get to me too, as a safety measure for myself!

Since you are starting Masha from a pup, do you think she'll be less likely to ever perceive her humans as a threat in response to something another dog was startled from? Because she and L are going to be a team, now, right? Yikes!
  • edited November -1
I would not want to be approached by team M & L thinking I was a threat! YOWZA!
  • edited November -1
No, I don't expect to have the same issue with Masha, she will know we are her providers and not a threat. With Luytiy, due to his age, he was more like a rescue so I just needed to build a solid trust foundation with him. I think we are 90% there. By nature, with animals, I am kinda standoffish and I think L picked up on that - I think that is why it took time for he and I to bond but he bonded instantly with Jen.

Masha on the other hand came right up to me, first off. She really seems to like me. :o)

I agree, it is really interesting how fast L took to his role as guardian and accepted our dogs as his family. He is very protective of them, and Jen.

    ----

An interesting thing I meant to mention regarding L, this trip he spent a lot of time in the car and so he has started guarding the car - he's pretty hectic about it too.

    ----

You should get the car guarding on video, I'm sure it'd be "a trip" to watch, lol. I'm glad the two of you are finally becoming buddy-buddy, you and Luytiy.

Masha does look like a "mad scienist" but she is totally adorable! Good luck with Masha and Fuji. Maybe keep them in crates next to each other. So Fuji will just "Get use" to her and will hopefully help on the "how to deal with her".
  • edited November -1
Awww, he's guarding the car. How cute. ~
  • edited November -1
Yowza is right! But I am glad that you a Big L have come to a happy agreement. And Masha is just too adorable. She will get the housetraining bit soon. Not all dogs can be Nihon Ken. :)

"By nature, with animals, I am kinda standoffish...

I wouldn't expect this from someone with 11 dogs and alpaca (sp?) in the future!

P.S. Im glad you didn't have to go for a winter swim in the pool...

Car gaurding as cute as it might sound, actually sucks a lot. Nemo does it too. If I ever get pulled over with Nemo in the car, I'm affraid the cop would think he is a thretaning animal and possibly hurt him.

Oh Brandon, I would never have thought of that!

Brad - wow about you and L!! That would freak me out a little bit too. I'm glad you have been able to bond more.

"Masha on the other hand came right up to me, first off. She really seems to like me. :o)" - Maybe you'll have a "daddy's girl"! ;-)
And I agree with all - LOVE Masha's spikes!!

Those are really great Brad! I love how Masha and Luytiy play.

Masha and Loa are two crazy girls! It looks like they love eachother though and that is great!

It's also cute to see Kahuna as a "big brother"! He is not the puppy of the house anymore! LOL!
  • edited November -1
I'm just watching all the videos now - she's like almost the size of Loa! holy crap!
  • edited November -1
Why does youtube move at snailspeed but photobucket videos work just fine? Brad I'm going to have to ask you to move all of your videos to photobucket and repost them.
  • edited November -1
I think it's Brad's new fancy movie camera right? It's always slow on here, but if you go to the YouTube website they work OK.
  • edited November -1
Hey you're right. Why didn't I think of that?
  • edited November -1
They are going to make quite the pair Brad. I can't believe how huge Masha is for such a young puppy. :-)
