"Nessun Dorma" at Tosca's House

edited November 2008 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
No, I did not have any sexy tenors at my house last night! (Prefer baritones or basses anyway. :D) Nessun dorma means "no one sleeps" and that was exactly the case last night and into this morning. As if to punish me for talking about her and posting silly pics on this forum and such, Tosca would not let me sleep. She received the first of two shots for a lyme disease vaccine yesterday and I don't know if that was the cause or if she's just being a turd, but we both got no sleep last night. She couldn't settle down and when I'd get in my bed, pull up the covers and get comfortable, she'd bark and even give an occasional howl - odd behavior for what has been a quiet dog with me, her foster, and her original people. We went out walking at unheard of hours and I tried to do anything I could think of for her to calm her but nothing would help her to rest and that meant I couldn't either. In her defense, she is very attentive if I'm unwell or otherwise distressed; she merely expects the same consideration she shows us. We finally got some sleep at about 10am, but I had to call out of work today because I was so dead on my feet.

I was wondering if anyone has had this sort of a reaction to an injection, blood draw, or vaccine, or if this may be a case of severe Shiba Mind (and body) Control. She seems back to normal now - everyone start knocking on wood. I'll keep an eye on her. It was just so strange.

*Incidentally, she loves the aria Nessun Dorma and her ears flick like crazy during Vissi d'Arte - the soprano piece from the opera Tosca. Over all, she seems to have good musical taste.*

While I don't recall either of our dogs having a reaction, my guess is she was uncomfortable or not feeling well in some respect from the shot. Happens with humans all the time... I heard several people at work say they got sick (fever, sore throat, chills, etc.) after this year's flu shot. No doubt happens with animals, too. Many vaccines are simply the injection of a mild form of the disease, so I guess the Lyme vaccine could cause joint pain or a severe headache or something similar (at least, those are some of the human symptoms)...

I would definitely keep a close eye for the diarrhea, evidence of fever (hot dry nose, warmer than usual to the touch, etc.), and it seems like maybe it has blown over if she is acting fine today.

Our vet usually gives benadryl when we get vaccinations and they sent home a handy chart for weight/dosage of at home childrens benadryl. We only had to give it to the Keiko once when she was acting all miserable and sore, but it really seemed to help her settle down and get some sleep - if nothing else I'm sure the sedating effect helped with that. Maybe it's something to ask the vet about next time?

She might be training you. Shiba mind control. I bark - she rises! I howl - she lets me out!
Just a thought... our shibas love to test us.

She knows where her name comes from, and she obviously really likes Puccini- what's wrong with a little drama in the middle of the night?
