There's hair EVERYWHERE!!!!!

HELP! Honey has been shedding a TON. What kind of vac do you guys use for the puppy hair??? I have a regular Bissell, but I was hoping to find a little handheld thing since I need something that can reach everywhere.

What do you guys suggest?

The more you brush the easier it is on your vacuum. I brush Miso 2x a day while he is blowing his coat and that way less hair sheds into places I have to clean later. Then my Bissell just picks up whats leftover.

Handhelds get clogged really easily IMO, and I haven't found one that can do the job properly.

hmm, when Toby blew his coat, i'd just take him outside and brush it all out with a comb. The furminator ended up doing damage to his fur cause we used to too much. We never had issues with his hair going everywhere because we'd always brush him and we knew when it was coming out ( lighter hairs would be peeking through the guard hairs and it was loose and could be pulled right out )

So your pups enjoy being brushed?
Honey doesnt HATE it....but it's just hard to get the little ball of energy to sit still long enough to get the brushing done. LOL (But I'll keep working with her on it.)

It took Miso a while to get used to the brush. He thought it was a game and wanted to steal the brush from me and chew it! Finally we figured out that if I hold his favorite treat (Cheese) in one hand and brush with the other he didn't mind. Now we have gotten to where if he lets me do a good brushing he gets the cheese.

Like everything with the Shiba it takes patience. They are Shiba's after all...

I actually trained Toby to sit/lay in my lap, so I just pick at him while he's right in front of me, watching tv or something. I trained him with the brush since he was a very little puppy.

I read in the Complete Shiba Manual that baths accelerate the coat blowing process. So, Ichi got a nice warm and thorough bath with a strainer above the drain to catch all the undercoat hairs. I thoroughly massaged his skin with his gentle shampoo (extremely mild and specifically formulated for allergic dogs). After the bath and he was dry (for the most part), out came the Furminator to get what little was left that the water couldn't dislodge from him (I let him chew on the kong treats while I brushed him). From that point on, things were very manageable.

Here's a camera pic of him after the coat blowing. Sorry for the terrible rez. I'll try to find a pic of the "before".

we have a Eureka Boss vacuum that keeps up pretty well. We also furminate during coat blowing once a week max and then the rest of the year use a Kong Zoom Groom.

If you have the extra $$, I've heard once you go Dyson vacuuming power, you don't go back.

We have a Dyson, it works well to pick up the hair - but it doesn't do a great job for allergies.

I don't recommend a Hoover Windpath, the filter has to be taken out and cleaned. It clogs A LOT of dust that will go everywhere when you are trying to clean it. It is easy to dispose the contains in the windtunnel, unless it is hair. I have to vacuum every 2-3 days and clean out the wind tunnel just as much.

I tried going with a bagless vacuum but it always clogged and I had to clean the vacuum so much.

I recently bought a $40 bissell at Wal-Mart that has bags and it seems to work great! Yes, I have to change the bags, but not nearly as much as I had to clean the baggless!

We have the furminator (NO more than once a week) and the Dyson. LOVE the dyson. Sasha sheds year round...we end up with black carpet.

We have an old Electrolux that was a hand-me-down, and it is the best vacuum cleaner EVER. It uses bags, but I have never had a problem with it not being able to pick up the fur. However, it is old, and I am going to have to get a new one soon (as it is too expensive to get parts for it now). I just hope I can find one that works as well but does not cost a fortune.

I just saw an advertisement for a bissel pet hair vacuum and pet hair hand-held. Has anyone seen this or used it? I was wondering if it worked well.

We have the Dyson DC17 Animal - Works great. Really gets all the dust and hair out of the carpet and corners. Dyson's are kind of money though. The new Ball Dyson looks pretty cool! And not as expensive as the other models - I think its 300-400. Dyson also has the Handheld - I really want the Animal Handheld to use on my stairs! That one is around 200 I think.
