Big day - Conehead Keiko pictures

edited November 2008 in General
Today was the day poor little Keiko monster got spayed, micro-chipped, teeths pulled, rabies shot and nails trimmed (well she gets that done a lot, but I figured she was goin' under, might as well let them take care of it). She did really well and everyone at the vet was in love with her. There was an older woman tech that kept telling me she was going to take her home because she couldn't get enough Keiko kisses. Turns out Keiko is 14.5lbs at 7 months old, even the vet couldn't get over how tiny she seems - I'll have to measure her at her shoulder when she can stand again so I'll know how tall she is.

She's currently sleeping near my feet under my desk, she looks all miserable, but I'm sure I'm making it seem worse than she actually feels (read as - my baby got cut open and I feel guilty!). There's no way I wouldn't have ever done it, but I'm glad it's over with and the healing can begin!!

Here are a couple pictures of sleepy Keiko.

wow - that's a lot of work. I'm glad she is doing well - she looks good!

Why did she need teeth pulled?

Aww she looks like she had a rough day, poor baby.

She didn't lose all of her baby teeth on her own so they went in and got the last couple out - I didn't realize it was a common practice, but I think Nola had the same thing done today. She also has a slight under bite, so they were making sure there weren't any problems with her front right fangs impacting her gums.

One of my rottweilers had a bit of an overbite growing up as a puppy. Guess what the vet told me to do that could possibly correct it? Play tug-of-war. Not sure if that was the cure but sure enough after a few months his bite righted itself. Maybe that would help?

Awww, what a big day for her. I'm glad she's recovering well. In a day or two you'll have trouble keeping her clam. :-)

Poor babe! We haven't seen her in a while Evan, she's starting to look more adult. ;)~

Awww, she will recover soon enough and be back to her normal Shiba self! Just give lots of love! Miso also had to have baby teeth removed when he got nutered since they hadn't all fallen out.

How is Belle doing? (can't forget the Shiba Inu in disguise!)

poor little Keiko. She'll be back to good in 24 hours tops!
Definitely watch that underbite, that really affected Tsuki's adult teeth formation and the subsequent pulling of one top adult tooth for being pushed out of the way by a bottom tooth.

Awww, she's got that 'woe is me' look to her. Hopefully she'll back up and running in no time!

Poor baby.....Wow that's a lot to have done at once.

Yeah having all of that as a human we would be more than "woe is me". She probably is going to be a bit sore.
Keep an eye on her and pamper if she needs it.

Sending good wishes Keikos way for speedy recovery.

She's back to her normal self already. At 4am I hear " AROOOROOOROOOROOrooroorooo" So I spring out of bed thinking something must be wrong... but no, she was just talking to me letting me know it's time for kisses now! After about 15 minutes of nonstop licking I was finally able to get her outside for potty time lol.

The worst part of today is that I have to keep her and Belle separated - their normal play is just a little too rough for a post-surgery Keiko. They're currently sitting at the divider whining at each other and then whining at me lol. Hopefully I can maintain some sanity this week :o)

Glad to hear it. And you may as well kiss your sanity goodbye. You'll get it back next though, don't worry. Well, at least as much back as being owned by a Shiba will allow. ;-)

Ahi has that same baby tooth issue, it is pretty common in Shikoku.

They took out Niko's "baby" teeth when she was spayed and come to find out they pulled one of her adult teeth.

    Glad Keiko is doing well!!

Well... everything was going just fine, until today when I noticed that her incision was starting to come apart. Took her back to the vet, she got cleaned up and re-glued and bandaged. Now I have to keep a bandage on her (which she is not liking) and give her antibiotics twice a day. Plus they gave me a topical antibiotic cream in case we notice her licking that I'm supposed to apply every 1-2 hours. Not to mention another lovely vet bill ;o)

She's so lucky she's worth every penny and minute!!

Aww! That stinks that Keiko's incision came apart. (I must have missed this thread taking care of little Nola!)

Glad to hear she is re-glued, and I am sure she is not liking the bandage. Has she been reunited with Belle?

Nola had three teeth removed on Monday with her spay. And she may have to have a fourth pulled once the permanent tooth starts to come in. However, her mouth is doing so much better, and is no longer bleeding all over the floor. Thank goodness! Another week and both her and Keiko should be back to their little Shiba antics!

Oh, and by the way, Keiko makes me feel so much better about Nola being small! (No offense.) Nola weighed in at 15.9 lbs before her spay (I am sure she lost a few ounces during the spay!). She is about 13.5 inches at the withers and is now 6 months old. (My how time does fly! And she is giving me a dirty look because I made her stand up to measure her!)

Evan, so sorry about all your bumps in the road. Im sure she is loving the extra attention though!

Awww, poor little girl. I'm glad she's all patched up. I know its tough, but keeping her clam for a few extra days will be much better for her in the long run. Give her lots of hugs from me!

Hee hee - keeping her clam. :)

    Get better soon, Keiko.

Well it's the middle of the night and we're off to the Emergenct Vet... Keikos incision has come apart again... this time I can see a stitch :o(

Hate that my baby has to go through this... and it's not so fun for us either.

    Keep us in your prayers.

Awww, poor Keiko...next thing you know she will come home wearing a cone!

Happy recovery! I know she can't wait to play with Belle again.

    You are in our thoughts.

Well... after much time at the ERVet, we're home with staples. Apparently she was having a reaction to the internal stiches which was causing it to keep coming open. Sadly... she is a cone head right now :o( We're almost at $1000 for her spay *sigh*, but I want my baby to be healthy and happy. The worst part is we're going to friends house for Thanksgiving and she won't be able to play with the Great Dane and German Shepherd mix.

Ok... time to sleep for 3 hours :o/

    Poor girl.
I hope everything goes well now.

For Thanksgiving, do you think she might be a bit stressed out to be with the other dogs and not be able to play with them? Maybe it would do her better to stay home and rest?
  • edited November -1
Awww. Poor Keiko, Im sure she is not very happy this AM. Hopefully the staples will help her heal and she will be back to normal in no time. When it comes to our fur babies, no cost is too much to spend for their health and well being!

Give lots of hugs and kisses from us! (To Belle too so she doesn't feel left out!)

And I know its silly, but I would like Cone Head Keiko Spam please. :P
