Backbacks & hiking leashes

edited August 2007 in General

We're going to stay at a cabin for a week in North Carolina and we're taking the dogs.

I'd like to get some nice leashes I can put around my waist (hands free) that'll also give them something more than 6 ft of roaming space.

Also, Brad - didn't you get Ahi a Palasaids II backpack? How did that work out? What size did you get?

That sounds like fun, the weather is finally getting cooler too. Enjoy!

Yes, we have the Palisades Pack II, we got it in a size small. We have been very pleased with it both the pack and the harness that it sits on (it's detachable) are very good quality and seem to fit well. I highly recommend it.

We also have the elastic hiking leash from Ruff Wear that goes around your waist - it works well. I mean I guess it does it's job - I don't love using it tho. I prefer just to use a normal leash and attach it to my waist.

So you didn't like the Roamer leash?

    Why?

Small, eh? I think what fits Ahi should fit Ronan. Does the small still fit her well?

Yea, the small fits her very well, she wears it at least once a week - the medium is really large. Hilo has a medium in the harness.

As for the roamer leash, I just don't like the elastic when I'm walking with her. Also, it give very little control, so when your on a trail and an off leash dog comes walking towards you it is much harder to get your dog out of harms way fast enough. I totally see the point of the elastic when your running or rollerblading or something like that with her but not hiking.

    Got it.

They have cheaper ones that switch between waist and hand control and still have that short handle thingy.

Ordering small for the little Ronanator in blue. He's going to FREAK the first time I put it on him.

Tasha has a Granite Wear pack, and of course, could care less.

Michelle,   I got a backpack for Tenji and he freaked a little a first  but I had him wear it around the house and added a few things to it, i.e., a box of macaroni for the noise,  and a water bottle.  He got used to it after a couple of tries and I have taken him for a few hour long walks with it.   I use a flexi-leash on our walks in the park.  It works well.

Good to know. If Tenji got used to it, then so will Ronan. Twins til the end.
