Nippo Vid

edited November 2008 in General
I didn't take that much video at Nippo, was mainly enjoying it with the wife. This is some footage of the first day. It was split into 2 days with the 2nd day being basically all Shiba.

As much as Nippo is the preservation society for all Japanese breeds, they're pretty much swamped with Shiba, Kishu, and Shikoku (in that order). The Kai and Akita pretty much stick to their individual preservation societies. As of last week there were nearly 700 Shiba entries, 140 Kishu, 120 Shikoku, 7 Kai, and 1 Akita.

Nippo had a professional still cameraman and film crew there as usual, so the pics/video will probably be available on their website. They had Nippo hats at one of the tents, and it looks like they sell them on the site as well.

There were a few groups of foreigners attending, some Germans, Italians, and one American couple.

Wow, those statistics are really interesting. The fact that it is Shiba dominated is not totally surprising, but the extent to which that is the case is shocking. Perhaps even more interesting is the number of Kishu as it is the least well represented on the forum (and from what little research I've done equally rare outside of Japan).

Those were some really good looking dogs though. I'm thoroughly impressed. Thanks for the video!!!!!!!

I really did fall in love with the Shikoku at the show. There were some beautiful dogs there. The bit at the end of the clip with the two Kishu and then the two Shikoku were the best male and female in show competing for BOB.

Dave, I was shocked when I found out the application numbers last week. I was hoping to see some more Akita :P I've definitely seen a lot more Kishu around than Shikoku while living in Japan.

I always try and get a bit of the Nihonken snarkiness in videos I post on Youtube. Hopefully potential owners can see what they may be getting themselves into. But I must say, overall the Shikoku and Kishu seemed to be the most friendly of all the Nihonken I've seen so far. The Kai at last months show were definitely more stand offish toward strangers.

I noticed how friendly the Shikoku in the video were toward people, they liked to jump up and greet everyone and liked to be pet by strangers. That's nice to see. Thank you for posting these!!

    Very cool spam, Shigeru!

It's interesting (not in the good way, IMO) that the Kai and Akita people just don't seem to care much about the National thing.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Kelly - Shikoku LOVE people.

Shigeru - Great video! Thanx for posting, I know you are busy. I posted a comment on the video on YouTube, but I'll just reiterate it here - the Kishu that won BOB was superb - a really nice looking dog! He had great head and deep chest. I wonder if you met Katja, I know she was there.

    VERY COOL!

I'm so totally bummed I missed out this year. Next year will be fun though! Hopefully we can get a group to go then - a Nihon Ken Forum meet up!

Thanks for the video fix. As always looks like fun.

In 2006, there were only 2 Akita and then none in the 2007 show. I'm not surprised.

Akita and Hokkaido, have separate organisations (AKIHO, DOKENHO, DOKENKUYU), and they are organising they own shows. In NIPPO standard there is info that a blue spots on dog tongue should be treated as a fault, and this mark is quite popular among Hokkaido :)
