Cat deaths possibly linked to Orijen

edited November 2008 in Food, Nutrition, & Health
Dave found this article on Cat deaths that have been occuring in Australia. The only link that they find between all the cats is they were all eating Orijen Cat Kibble.

Dave is really busy right now, so he asked me to post this for him...I think it is important to point out - although Orijen is a 6 star food - It comes from out of the country and when foods are imported they can be contaminated upon arrival. Orijen is a very good food and this had nothing to do with how they process their foods, but when you import foods, animal or human kind - there is always a risk.

Here is the link with more info: http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/cat-deaths-linked-to-pet-food/2008/11/23/1227375062012.html

    Their statement: http://www.championpetfoods.com/Australia_Consumer_Release.pdf

I was actually following a thread about this to see if any definitive info was relevant to the dog formula because it appeared that irradiation upon entry to Australia caused the issue:

Yeah, like I said in my first post - I don't think this has any relation to how Orijen processes their food. It is just the exporting and importing of it. I would just check the food, smell it, check the expiration date, etc. to be on the safe side. This was kind of just a reminder that a lot of these premium dog foods are imported in our countries and things like this can happen...the chances are pretty slim - but it CAN happen.

It seems safe for now. Looks like the treatment reduced a vitamin in the cat's food and effected the cats.
It also reduced the same vitamin in the dog food imported to Australia, but it did not effect the dogs. Cats are very sensitive to change in things.
Thankfully, the treatment only seems to happen in Australia.

But, that is still very sad. :( Those poor cats.

Wow, that's weird! I'm glad I live in Canada, my food doesn't travel too far.

I really feel for those who have lost their cats due to this. Losing your cats to something you were doing because you wanted the best for them.
