The Anderson family is under attack!

edited December 2008 in General
I just chased an Eagle away from the house, he was going for Kona [Luytiy was off-duty, eating]!

Over the weekend a Hawk came to get Maui - Luytiy did his job tho, chased the bird off then stood by Maui till he was gone. I took some pics of the Hawk...

The Coyote and Mountain Lions are one thing, but the birds freak me out. You have no idea they are around then all of the sudden they are swooping in!

We are keeping the Shiba inside for now. :o\

    Holy shit.

I'll send you the hawk in our freezer. You can toss it at the eagle when it comes in and confuse the hell out of him :P

Whoa. I can't believe a hawk would go after such large prey as Kona. Scary.

Good Job, Luytiy! (On protecting Maui)
  • edited November -1
Oh wow.. how bad are those birds? Can they really harm a shiba?
  • edited November -1
The eagle I chased off could easily carry away a Shiba [or even Loa] - they eat Jack rabbits around here that outweigh a Shiba by a good 10lb [and are as big as Ahi in size].

The Hawk could probably not carry a Shiba away... but they could do a LOT of damage to one of the dogs if there was a conflict.

Wow!! I've heard of a chihuahua being carried off by a bird, but a Shiba or Kai?!?! That's crazy! It's good you have Luytiy.

Chad says get a flare gun.
Im glad the pups are ok! Good job L!!!
  • edited November -1
Oh no! I warned you about them eagles Brad!

Poor Maui & Kona!! [ though I think Kona would be quite hard to carry away ] Those birds are brave! Go big L! Defender of the Pack!!

Give him some extra love for us :) ~

I don't think the Eagle would be able to make off with Kona, possibly Maui or Kaia. The really scary part would just be if the Eagle made an attempt and were to get it's talons into any of the dogs back, neck, or head.

You have a huge fence, now you just need a dome...

Yea, I agree Brandon, I'm less concerned about them taking a dog as I am of what will happen if they get into it with one of the dogs.

    ----

    Then again, there is this:

*Yes, that's a freaking dear in that video!

Dang, so much danger lurking around. I'm starting to think you might want to invest into a predatory bird that feeds on predatory birds. Not sure how the dogs would take it, but you might just need someone to guard the skies above. One who will protect the pack but at the same time leave them alone.

Any predatory bird breeders out there?

That's pretty scary, it GREAT that you HAVE a pack of dogs. There is protection in numbers!

    * Ah shizniz, I thought that deer was a gigantic rabbit at first!
  • edited November -1
Holy crap. Are the Eagles/Hawks near you that big?
  • edited November -1
Haha it's ok Corina, I thought the deer was a rabbit too.
  • edited November -1
I think you, Jen and the dogs could use a feline touch -very big grin-.

How about I send you one or two of these to add to your pack?

I can guarantee you that you will no longer have problems with birds of prey.
  • edited December 2008
Forget birds of prey, wouldn't have any problems with the cougars either! lol

You can go for a liger Brad, they're HUGE! Like 2x the size of a lion.
    image

    Back-up for L! :D ~

    that's amazing Corina!
  • edited November -1
LOL! That would be crazy. I mean, Ligers are "bred for their skills in magic"....

    ----

Brandon - The Eagle in that video is a Golden Eagle, that is EXACTLY what I chased off that swooped down at Maui! That thing could take me away!

    ----

Corina - My friend here in Taos really wants a Raptor, he even volunteers at the raptor rescue. He could probably help me out. lol [CRAZY!]

    Christ that's a big bird.

    lol!

but in all seriousness, that bird is crazy scary! I would keep the shibas in too!
  • edited November -1
I'm not going to lie, I'd like to ride a liger :)

    lol ~
  • edited November -1
Wow. Crazy. You definitely need some kind of bird deterence system... I think I am going to agree with the liger theory. BIG GIANT CAT scares off BIG GIANT BIRD.

But I think the more important question (that maybe I missed somewhere along the line) is for Rina... Why do you have a hawk in your freezer???

We only have bald eagles and falcons around here. Luckily they do not get big enough to pose much of a threat to anything bigger than a house cat.

LMAO @ Casey. Well Errik is Native and dances at powwows. He got the hawk to use its feathers on his regalia. He was supposed to have someone clean it and everything months ago but of course, they're being a pain and not getting back to us so the hawk stays in the freezer.

Wow! Crazy Brad! That bird is freaking ginormous! That vid with the deer is CRAZY! Corina's vid is really cool too!
  • edited November -1
Would crossing some wire (perhaps barbed, but barbed would hurt them if they decide to charge) over your backyard be very difficult? You probably don't even need to make the "net" very tight, since birds of prey normally have a large wing span.
  • edited November -1
Would hanging used CD's on wires like ornaments all over the tops of your fences be enough to detract them? The sun would hit the CD just right and WHAM! instant sun glare at birds enough to throw them off? Just a thought on a cheap solution...

Daaammmnn, Brad, that vid is freaky! I didn't realize Eagles were so huge!

Love that Video, Corina. It's so cool that the lion was adopted by the doggie.

Ligers are beautiful, but they are also sterile, so what's the point of making them? Like Mules. Why the hell do you need to create Mules, they're also sterile and donkeys are available. Why bother?
  • edited November -1
    Off topic:

The temperment of a Liger (breeding male lion with a female Tiger) and Tigon (breeding male tiger with a lioness) are more unstable then that of a Lion or Tiger, confusion is quite common. Males are sterile but the females can produce. If you breed a Liger or Tigon back to a Lion or Tiger, I believe somewhere between F3-F5, males are no longer sterile. Then a mating is possible between a Ligers and Tigons and offspring will result. This is where you would run into weird percentages for example. 35.5% Tiger and 65.5% Lion.

Barbara - I believe Mules have more stamina, more endurence then donkeys or horses. There was a reason why they were created. Whearas with hybrid felines, generally a result of accidental breeding or intended breeding for human interest - whatever it may be.

Taken from the wiki article about mules, because I'm too lazy to type up my own reasons:

The mule possesses the sobriety, patience, endurance and sure-footedness of the donkey, and the vigour, strength and courage of the horse. Operators of working animals generally find mules preferable to horses: mules show less impatience under the pressure of heavy weights, and their skin, harder and less sensitive than that of horses, renders them more capable of resisting sun and rain. Their hooves are harder than horses', and they show a natural resistance to disease and insects. Many North American farmers with clay soil found mules superior as plow animals, especially in the U.S. state of Missouri, hence the expression "stubborn as a Missouri mule".

Mules exhibit a higher cognitive intelligence than their parent species - horses and donkeys. This is believed to be the result of hybrid vigour, similar to how mules acquire greater height and endurance than either parents.
  • edited November -1
How exactly do you test for intelligence in Mule vs a Donkey or a Horse? Did the Mule pass Algebra? Read Tolstoy? Mules are still used as load bearers, like donkeys. It's a poor excuse to create an animal. And I have a hard time believing that a Mule has more stamina than a horse.

And if only the Female lion/tiger cross, than again what is the point? Why do we need a large feline with a better attitude? Is it actually for science or Sigfried and Roy (poor Roy)?
