Hey Dog! Get out of my yard!

edited December 2008 in General
So the question is, if you live in an area where you own a patch of grass, do you mind if people's dogs poop (picked up of course) and pee on your yard?

I walk my dog around a neighborhood that is part college town and part uh-'ghetto'. There's usually pieces of trash (mostly caused by college students) strewn across the grassy area. I'm walking by a middle school and Pong decides to go pee on the grass on the other of the school's fence closest to the street. Basically there's a fence around the building but they leave a couple feet of grass not fenced. I get called out by an older man (not part of the school, just walking bystander) who said that it isn't a good idea to allow my dog to pee in that area because of the kids. I just said 'sure' and moved along because I didn't want conflict and I didn't really think about it.

As I kept walking, I came up with various reasons for both side of the argument. Granted, it was school property, but no signs were posted up. It was in an area where the kids definitely do not play in and probably don't even go towards (back of the building/yard where they don't even allow students). There was poop about 3 feet away that no one picked up on the same patch of grass.

What the man could have argued is that it IS school property, and there's probably some sort of rule about pets on school property. The urine is bad for the kids and I shouldn't even let her near it.

She already peed so there was nothing I can really do. I would've picked up the poop if she pooped. It got me thinking about people who live in the city and how they deal with it or homeowners who don't have dogs.

So to reiterate the question, would you want dogs to do their business on your property?

As long as the owner picks up the poo and doesnt let their pup roam ALL OVER my yard looking for that golden spot.....I've got no problems with it.

But I've also asked myself if other home owners get upset that my pup drops a turd on their lawn (which I pick up quickly of course). It seems like Honey has a knack for picking the yard where the owner is out working on the hedges or something to do her business. (DOH!)

I've had people come running out of their yard to tell me not to let my dogs relieve themselves on their lawn. I even had one woman chase me down in her car. And come to think of it, another neighbor who put a sign on her lawn that said "No Dog Poop".

I don't let it bother me. Its going to happen. If its not your dog, its the rabbit or squirrel who lives in the neighborhood. Just make sure to clean up the poo and remember which houses if any aren't friendly toward it.

lol Dave. I can see you, Lucy, & Joey running down the street with a lady chasing after in her car screaming "NO DOG POOP!!!!!!!"

I don't think I would mind so much, given that's it's properly picked up....& they don't make a habit out of it...& they're not wandering around for an hour trying to find a spot. :o

But then I think, would your dog like it if sanother dog came & pooped in his yard? Wouldn't your dog see it as another dog makring his territory?

Maybe I'm looking too much into it :( ~

Don't sweat it too much. Some people just have nothing better to do than worry about silly things like that. Like Dave said, wild animals pee and poo all over the place, and then there are cray things like rain and pollution.

    Some people just suck.

Dog pee on my yard all the time. It's great, because then Miko and Piggy pee immediately to re claim their territory.

Are there children who roll in urine in your area? Not good for the kids, ok, but your pup wasn't piddling on the soccer field or anything. It was watering the lawn near the sidewalk/road. No big deal. If that's your walk route and the urge strikes him, there's really very little you can do about it. Just be responsible and pick up any lawn art and everything should be ok.

I have had people give me a hard time. A lady threatened to set her dog (large, angry-looking dog) on me once. As if on cue, Tosca squatted for a poo looking right at her. She started yelling as I picked up the little gift Tosca had left for her and strode off down the street.

Is dog urine really harmful to kids? I'd never heard that before and kind of laughed when I read it. I mean... kids roll around in dirt and god-knows-what all the time, I just assumed there are much worse things to worry about than dog pee. Keiko also has the knack of finding her perfect spot on the lawn of someone who is outside... luckily the neighborhood we walk through has wastebaskets and little baggies posted every 10 feet or so, as if to say "hey, it's cool... just clean it up!" It's actually a Portland law that you must pick up the poo (so I've been told).

It makes no sense that people would get upset about dog...uh...waste. I mean, honestly, unless the dog is peeing on your prize winning roses, who cares? If the dog poops, be responsible (and nice) and pick it up.

If the dog does not go there, something else will. We have tons of rabbit poop in our back yard (and probably the front yard, too but we never hang out there). Not to mention the deer that have to pee somewhere.

People get so bent out of shape over the stupidest things. If someone complains about it (especially on public property like a public school), I would just laugh at them, and ask 'well, where would you like me to have them go?'

ETA - Oh, and the whole thing about it not being good for the kids... If it was an elementary school, which I am assuming it was, some kid or another has probably already peed there. Kids do the strangest things.

    Sorry, end rant.

Just mentioned how dogs do their duty in the city. When I went to NYC a month or so ago, there was dog pee EVERYWHERE. Dogs just pee on the sidewalk. Its rather gross. Couldn't tell you a thing about the poop, though. I have no idea.

You know what I don't care, I feel verbally abused when someone tell me where my dog should or should not pee, sniff, poop, look... Of course we have manners but hey if he poops on the side walk instead of on the street and I am picking it up and someone comes to me and tell me this and that, I won't be polite.

Aww I'm becoming a real Parisian (although for that I would have to stop picking up after Akira ;))

Kids have gotten into much worse. At the dog park in Hawaii, there some plastic obstacles for the dogs to play with. How many dogs do you think marked that plastic thing each day? And kids would roll in it like it was a hamster wheel. Sick.

I don't care if anyone's dogs pee/poop in my yard. I've got better things to do than watch my yard anyway. Besides, I second what Jess said, it just makes Ryu re-mark that spot faster!

I got yelled at for walking by a lawn with my dog before lmao. She's like "keep moving or I'm calling the cops!" Crazy people lol.

I guess I'm alone on this one but I think it's a bit rude to let a dog onto someone else's lawn. The grass on the other side of the sidewalk is public property so I don't see why you have to go on private property. Meh *shrugs*

I don't have a sidewalked road, we have ditches - it's a bit rural, still. There are dogs that run free, but my neighbors know that we pick up Jazz's poop.

Once again, it's the responsible dog owners out walking our reasonably well mannered dogs on leashes who get yelled at even as we are stooping to catch the poo BEFORE it hits the ground...Why worry about dog pee on unclaimed land? All the same, I get irritated when a strange dog wanders on to my lot and bends a biscuit because of possible parasites and I know I glare at the owners while they walk on by, but I don't ever say anything, I just pick it up.

We're really lucky that we live in a super dog friendly area. It's pretty yuppy and upscale (except for our little row of old duplexes) and I think more people have dogs than don't. Not a walk goes by without meeting 5 or 6 other dogs and most people are pretty friendly. Dogs are pretty much welcome everywhere...lawns, caffe patios and pretty much any store that doesn't sell food. HOWEVER, there is always the odd crazy old cook with nothing better to do than bitch about my dog peeing on their lawn

My kid Rudi (shiba) refuses to use his own yard for pee or poop. Instead, right after I get the rabbits, aviary birds, and chickens fed and watered at 7 a.m. Rudi gets his first walk for the day. I do not live in the city and I am surrounded by worked feilds (right now they just finished cotton and iceburg lettuce). We have four routes we can take, one takes us about 1/4 mile to the west to meet up with the Rio Grande River. He likes the river walk because he can jump into the river and make a splash of the sand and water. We travel through dirt roads that connect the fields and pass several houses along the way that have fenced doggies. Rudi does not poop between the house and the river, he waits until we get there. I carry along a plastic bag for pooping scooping. The other three routes are similar, a pecan orchard, a 50 acre parcel that has been set for home development, and not too far from that an actual neighborhood. This new development has only baby trees and plants. No one there has any yard what-so-ever, but there is a winding landscaped path that very nice. It clearly looks to be a great place for walking dogs. However, even though I clean up every poop from Rudi, the rest of the occupants that frequent this park/path through the housing development do not care. Every day I see more and more piles of poop. I am sure one day someone is going to either ban dogs from this area or put up signs and threaten to fine the culprits. Other than that I am all to happy to bring back Rudi's deposits to my own garbage and not worry about those folks. It is really not hard to clean up after a loved one, it can actually keep the hands warm on this cold early morning adventures. LOL

I do keep Rudi off of folks real front yards (if you can call them that, all of these are rock-scaped)
