I still can't believe it...

edited December 2008 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
So this morning John gets up to get ready for work and he goes to let the dogs out the back door to go potty.  We stayed at his dad's house who has no fenced in backyard and acres upon acres of forest behind it and a swamp to the right of the house.  In his I'm-not-fully-awake-yet stupor he lets Kohji and News out and Taj decides to take advantage of his compromised state and darts under his legs and runs out the door.

No fence, lots of forest.

Kohji and News are trained off leash and will come when called so that was ok to let them out first without being tethered. Taj is a Shiba. There is a tether connected to the side of the house that I normally hook her to, but she outsmarted John this morning. I hear him panicking yelling "Are ya hungry? Treats!? TREATS!!" I know by what he's saying it can't be good.
So I proceed to get my shoes and coat on and prepare for a really cold excursion through deep snow at 6:30 am to find a black and tan Shiba and the sun hasn't even risen yet. I went outside and took this plastic container of dried cherries with me and shook it a few times and said "Taj look! Taj come!"

By some act of God she decided to come running toward me over the frozen swamp from the trees and jumped up on me like "Oh mom, those are my favorite treats in the whole world, I love those more than chipmunks burrowing in the snow over in those trees!!" I fed her a handful, and praised her like no tomorrow, just sitting there in shock at what just happened. She has NEVER come back to me when she's gotten away off leash in her whole 6 years of life. I still can't believe it...

Oh and John was so frazzled he had inadvertantly left the one bedroom door open where Butters, his dad's pitbull was. I keep Kohji and Butters separated because Kohji does not like him. I turned around from the doorwall to see them sniffing each other and then Kohji walked away from him as if everything was just was fine and dandy.

Sounds like a heart stopping morning. That is awesome that Taj came running at you. I'm a big fan of dried cherries too, I can understand her enthusiasm.

I am so glad for a happy ending. And Butters is a great name for a pit bull.

That must have been Shiba inspiration right there. It's really one of those "if this doesn't work..." moments. I'm glad it worked!
I agree that Butters is a really good name for a pit bull. Any dog actually.
