Roomba

edited December 2008 in General
Does anyone have any experiences with the Roomba? For those who do not know, Roomba is a self vacuuming robot. They can be purchased at irobot.com

Anywho, my parents have been working a lot and would perfer not to sweep Ninja's hair every day.

So for X-mas, I thought of the Roomba. We have all hardwood floors, but our Yorkie is really old and cannot control her bladder that well anymore so I don't know if this may affect it.

Which models do you suggest and are they worth it?

Thanks
-Joe

A roomba wouldn't survive 5 minutes in my home. If your pups like to chase things, I would suggest getting a swiffer (about $12) and spare yourself the heartbreak of spending the money on what would end up being akita prey...

I have all hardwoods too and we use a swiffer, and the Bissell healthy home and are pretty happy.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE (should I say it one more time ;-) my Roomba and my Scooba. My dog and 5 house cats completely ignore Roomba and let it do its job. I have had it break a few times (BTW, irobot customer service is great) and REALLY missed it. The one time that irobot couldn't fix Roomba, they sent me a new one without first having me send in the old one (ie, the new one came before I had a chance to send the old one back)...which is pretty amazing given their expense. It works really well on hardwood floors, tile, linoleum and okay on carpets. I have a roomba scheduler that I set to vacuum 3 to 4 times per week. Probably 97% of the time, it doesn't get stuck anywhere and returns to its base on finishing. For carpets, it will keep that hair down but they still will need an upright vacuum once in a while. Not so with the hardwood or tile floors -- roomba works super.

It will really help keep the dog and cat hair down and is simple to operate. I wouldn't want to live without roomba. And I don't think that your dog will bother it (IMO).

PS Scooba, the mopping robot, is also super (but you should remove more furniture to have it do its best job). And Jess, I like roomba because it frees me up to do other things and not sweep or vacuum as often while still keeping a clean house.

roomba works great! and if its for hardwood floors u should definitely get the scooba.
my dog doesnt get too close to it and usually just ignores the thing.
check out their website.i think they have some specials where u get 2 of the units and then they give a a third one for free.

Thanks for the responses. My Akita doesn't chase things so I believe she will ignore the roomba.

How about liquids and how often do you clean it out because of the hair?

Well, roomba isn't made for liquids, but if you go over a small wet spot I think it will be fine.

As far as emptying the bin, it depends, although irobot suggests every 3rd vacuuming time. I do mine based on how many of my animals are shedding (sometimes each time, sometimes less. It is super easy to empty and clean.

This one says it's specifically for hard floors... I wonder if it works well.

Well, my scheduler roomba does work well, so I would guess that the dirtdog does too. It is meant to handle tougher stuff than the regular roomba (eg, workshop dirt).

Here's how unafraid some animals are! (My dog and cats don't ride ours, but they are certainly NOT afraid of it)

    lol! I love it :) ~

LOL, that is too funny. I would hate to see the kitties tail get sucked up in there.

I have to say though, that thing is noisy; as noisy as a vacuum but at least that you are handling at the moment. I am guessing folks set it to run while they are gone.

One thing I would be concerned about is that my house could fill that poor thing before it got to the next room LOL, Geez I should fire the maid...Me!

Too cool, what a future we all have to look forward to. I think I will wait for the "Rosie" model

The cat is too funny....We had a guy around here that would ride his motorcycle with his cat. The cat had a helmet and everything. The owner would go into the local coffee bar and the cat would lay on the bike and wait. It was the craziest thing I think I have seen a cat do.

We loved the roomba when we were in the townhouse but we have two area rugs now that have tassels and it just did not work well with the equip. On the older model the shiba hair pretty much filled it in a short time. Hummm...I wonder if they will invent a tassel detection system eventually.

Ron, LOL! I'm not sure which I'd prefer - the loud droning of a regular vacuum or the sass-back of a talking vacuum... hmm...

That is so cool (the Roomba riding kitty).

I'm not sure what my cats would do with it. The Shikoku will most likely leave it, maybe chase but not break it. Whereas Lynx would definitely kill it, lol.

If Ninja and the rest of your animal crew won't break it, then you could always give it a try. If you end up getting it and have some Akita interaction with it, please record and post up the vid!

i have a roomba, sometimes my shiba will try to bite it but consistent correction will get them to leave it it alone. nowadays my shiba follows it around but shes more curious than anything else.

ps the roomba works great! definitely recommend it!
