Worse Than My Mother
Due to a massive train delay, I got home at around 7am on New Year's Day after a fabulous night in New York City with fellow singers and having my champagne buzz killed by the inaptitude of the MTA - 3 hrs. of inaptitude to be precise. Anyway, my father picked me up at the station and, much to my surprise, there was no problem. I got home in time to see my mother leave for work. No issue there either. Now, granted, they give me all the space I could ask for. I'm a twenty-three year old adult and their days of being able to pry too much into my social life are long over, but still, walking into my house at dawn after being out all night usually illicits a statement of some sort if for no other reason than it's out of character for me. 4am is my cut off point. I like my sleep. I walked into my kitchen and grabbed a glass of water, all while enjoying the fact that everyone seemed fine with my arrival.
I'm sorry. Did I say everyone? No. There was one family member who had a serious problem with my late/early arrival.
I heard the jingling of a collar, eventually, and I readied myself for the usual flurry of tail wagging and licks with which I am usually greeted. What I got was far from usual. Tosca came up the stairs, sat in front of me just out of reach, and gave me a look that seemed to register nothing but utter distain. She then turned and went back down to my apartment. She would not come to me. I had to practically lasso her in order to get her harness on and she kept her distance during our walk. When we came in and I went to bed (finally) it took her about 15-20 mins. to even get on the bed and a further hour or so to crawl up next to me for a pet and a hug. I think she made herself very clear.
