Vomiting and Heat

Hey everyone, my 9 months old shiba inu is currently in heat. ive noticed an increase in activity and other normal heat behaviors.

one problem that i am experiencing is that she is vomiting every other day. my initial thought is that this is not normal.. has anyone else experienced this? im planning to take her to the vet this coming tuesday because thats my free day.

We have been through 5 heats and none of our girls had an increase in vomiting during their heat. I would mos def see a vet about that.

Is she throwing up water, food, or yellow/orange foamy stuff? If it is the neon foamy stuff it may be that she is not eating - is she eating well?

she is definitely eating well. a healthy appetite for her dog food and treats.

she is throwing up yellow/orange foamy stuff for sure. there is not evidence of her food though. sometimes she eats grass and she throws that up too. when ever i catch her eating grass i correct her because she usually throws it up.

I would see a vet, too. My dog is 7 and she has never had any vomiting issues while in heat.

I would also add that you really want to consider getting her spayed unless you plan on breeding her. [ & I hope if you do plan on breeding her that you know her genetic history, have researched breeding, are breeding for the benefit of the breed, & are testing her before breeding her ]

In all honesty, unless you are breeding her there's not much of a reason to not spay her. It'll be easier on you & her ;)

As far as the vomiting goes I would take her to the vet as soon as you can. Better safe than sorry, I've never heard of vomiting as a symptom of a girl in heat. Hope the poor babe feel better soon <3 ~

thanks for the advice everyone :)

sangmort- i was back and worth at first but i have decided to not breed her. I was actually planning to spay her soon and unfortunately the timing was bad and she went into heat.

we had a female that went into heat before we could spay her, and she didn't have any symptoms besides the obvious signs of being in heat. I'd take her to the vet to be sure about the vomiting, and they can give you an estimated time that you will be able to spay her, too!

Usually the yellow foamy vomit means your pup's tummy is empty - could she be hungry? Maybe the extra calories burned from being in heat is making her need a bit more food? That's really just a guess.

Regarding grass and vomiting: Eating grass is one of the things dogs do to "cleanse" or "purge" the stomach when there is a problem. I would not "correct" or stop the grass-eating because it may help hasten the healing process.

That said, I agree with the others: Vomiting is not a symptom of the heat and it would be advisable to have a vet see her, especially if this has not resolved itself since the time from when you first observed it. Since it seems to be happening every other day it seems like there may a be problem with a food allergy or something, then things stabilize when the tummy is emptied, then a "flare-up" occurs perhaps when food is re-introduced. Just a hunch --- I'm no expert but have raised two dogs and two kids...

baanton- ive heard that grass is a supposed to be good for them but there has been senarios where she would eat grass and then vomit the grass out as a whole. the grass remains undigested. so thats when i first suspected that it was a problem. anyhow i will be taking her to the vet on tuesday and i'll be sure to share the information.

    thanks again everyone.

Like Brad said, the yellow foamy stuff (usually when I see dogs eat grass) means they are hungry, or at least their stomach is empty enough to be upset
