Shiba Fur Differences

Ok I am new here so I hope I'm not rehashing an old issue. Have any of you ever noticed two different kinds of fur on Shibas? For instance, if you see the pic on my introduction post, you might be able to see that my mom's Shiba Sadie has thick, double-coat fur and my Shiba Triton has thinner fur. Sadie looks like a little bear, her fur is SO thick and she sheds several dogs worth of fur during her shedding months. Triton has no double coat to speak of and his fur is sleeker. He sheds but not nearly as much as Sadie (clumps at a time). Has anyone else seen any evidence of this phenomenon?

    Basically, it seems that shibas can have really full coats that blow once or twice a year or thinner coats that always shed. My male seems to have a bit of both types, my female (a cream) has the thinner coat.

    Thanks for the info. He is a cream and that post did talk about creams having the thinner coats usually. His coat is very soft and sleek. I love it too, because I can dry him completely after a bath with a towel instead of the hair dryer.

    I would add, that there is the standard coat that blows in large clumps twice a year (stockhair) and the moss coat (I hope I am getting this right), which is the ideal show coat. It is plush, thick and full year round resulting in a coat that is always in prime show condition, but on the downside this coat sheds continuously. The majority of pet shibas probably fall somewhere in between the two types with no really clear distinction (like Jen mentioned). When I look at Beebe it seems that she has aspects of both types as well but Ike is most clearly the standard coat. I also think that inside dogs will have less coat for many reasons.

    Just a question about the name Beebe. We are considering adopting a Shiba named Beebe. How do you pronounce it and does it have a meaning?

    Seriously? I thought I came up with a unique name. I guess not :( Is this the little diabetic dog?

    Beebe: American for "Stink Blossum".

    Oh no does it really mean stink blossum?? :) How is it pronounced? BEE beh? We are definitely thinking about little Beebe the diabetic Shiba. I am going to the vet with T next week and I am going to ask him about it too because I really trust him.

    No, not really, she just smells like popcorn because of her allergies. Yay, you can have Beebe the Diabetic Shiba, and I will have what will forever be known on this thread as Stink Blossum Beebe :) That's a good pronunciation. Best of wishes with your adoption process, hope it pans out.

    hehe... smells like popcorn!!!!

    Keiko's paws sometimes smell like Doritos... kinda weird :o)

    Miss Keiko has yet another fine feature which intrigues me greatly, I should have smelled her a little more closely ;)
    Their saliva must contribute to the smell or something.

    i think mine has thinner coat that sheds year around... she never really grew a winter coat.

    got kinda the similar thing with my shibas too:)
    nikki my 1 yr old sesame-red has a real thick coat, she sheds like crazy, but sachi our new pup has a much thinner coat, wonder if she wld grow a thicker coat as she gets older :)
    when we got nikki at 8 wks, she was already a fuzzy fuzzball x)

    Sadie literally looks like a baby bear cub. Her fur is HUGE! It's so cute. Triton's fur is nice and smooth, very sleek and not at all fuzzy. They are both adorable!

    Glad Bella is not the only one whose feet smells like fritos. :)

    Now, on topic... Bella has thinner fur that really only gets fluffy around her hips in the late fall. Nola on the other hand is the fluffiest thing in the world. Since the weather has been so wacky, it seems that she blows her coat for a week, then stops for a week, then starts back up. Maybe once spring comes on full force she will get it all over with. Then maybe I can stop vacuuming twice a day. :)

    Crazy weather! Beebe has been blowing her coat on/off in clumps starting in one area one week, stopping, and then moving on to a new spot. My vaccuum exploded, I mean the bag actually blew up inside the thing only after 2 uses with a new bag. So much freaking hair!
