Long Island/ New York Shiba and other NIhon Ken Meetup

can any one suggest any good breeders in the Long Island/ New York area. Also any of you who have a shiba around here, where did you get your dog?

My shiba was a rescue from NYC.

Have you considered rescuing? There are so many awesome homeless shibas in the NY area.

I wanted to add, Moto was 6 months old, so remember you CAN rescue puppies.

I got one of my Shibas from Bali Hai Shibas. They are on Long Island.

I've heard many great things about Bali Hai Shibas, and the lady who runs it is very nice as well. Even if you don't want a puppy from her, she is great for asking questions.

Like Jessica said, checking out rescues is another great way to find a pups, as not all dogs have to be an adult for someone to not want them any more. Also, not all rescue dogs have major issues, some of them were given up due inconvenience or not being able to handle a dog to begin with. Some people a cute puppy, buy it, and don't want to take the bad with the good.

My pups, Tetsu, I actually got from a lady in Brooklyn who bought him from a breeder, possibly BYB as this was a whim thing. Once the fun wore off, apparently puppies "are supposed to come housebroken", and he went on her rug, she didn't want him anymore. She only had him for a week before she couldn't take any more. I picked him up, she showed me pictures of her trip and of his parents, promised to keep contact but disappeared off the face of the earth.

Doesn't matter, Tetsu is a great guy, plus I got him housebroken by the time he hit 3 months old.

I thought I would share this (source:the happypitbull.com, thanks Brad)
"The top ten reasons why dogs are surrendered to the shelter (according to the National Council on Pet Population and Study) are: moving, landlord issues, cost of pet maintenance, no time for pet, inadequate facilities, too many pets in home, pet illness, personal problems, biting, and no homes for littermates. As you can see, 8 out of 10 of these reasons have more to do with human inability to take responsibility for a pet, than with anything wrong with the pet itself."

Just something to know if there is any hesitation about rescue dogs.

Triton was a rescue and he is perfect. The nice thing about older dogs (not puppies) is that they can be already housebroken and in the case of Shibas, much calmer and easier to be with. Shiba pups can be insane (although adorable) and I think Shibas definitely get better with age.

I'm hijacking my own thread, Calia and I are trying to start a Long island shiba and nihon ken meetup. We know there's a NYC one, but we'd like to try and start one for people out here. I searched Long Island Shiba, and this thread popped up, hopefully we can get as big as the NYC and start taking donations for rescue organizations. One day I'd like to do the same search on google one day, and not have pet stores pop up, selling dogs from puppy mills. I'm glad the rescue pops up first.
