Shiba vs Ferret

edited March 2009 in General
Hi, I was just reading a discussion by Mejinx about a Shiba and a Ferret living together. I am really interested to hear some stories/views on Shibas living with a ferret or any other animals. (hope you don't mind Tony) What are the kind of steps taken during puppyhood to make this work?

I had two ferrets when Sachi was a puppy. All I had to do was teach her not to nip at them, just like teaching a pup not to nip at you or other people. Eventually she would just watch them play and if they decided to bug her she would usually go someplace else, it was the only time she ever wanted to be in her crate. They couldnt get her there. Sachi did learn that if one of the ferrets was trying to play with her and she didnt want to play she could lay on the ferret so I would come take the ferret away. She learned that from an older Aussie she grew up with. The Aussie was taught to chase ASachi down if she ever escaped out the door. The Aussie would catch up and pin her on the ground by laying on her until someone came and got her. Was pretty cool and made it way easier to catch her, lol. Sachi applied the technique to annoying ferrets.
The ferrets learned that if they tipped their food bowl and kicked it out of the cage Sachi would come eat it, she thought ferret food was WAY better than any dog food.
Sachi now resides with my tortoise, Pohaku. They live together really well, Sachi has even developed a taste for Pohakus left over romaine lettece.

Introducing an adult Shiba that has not been properly socialized with any "prey-like" animals would likely be disasterous. If introduced as a pup I don't see why they couldn't get along, if done correctly. Ferrets are very playful and curious critters and would probably make a good playmate for a Shiba. The only thing to keep in mind is that the ferret could also not be adjusted to a pup. I know mine were terrified of Jack, and I scrapped the introduction because I was afraid he would hurt them without intending to (he likes to land on things with his front paws while playing). But hey, if you can get a lion to play with a ferret I'm sure a Shiba pup will be no problem. :)
