Treat Question

Yesterday I picked up a "Kong" for Oliver.....he seems to like it. It came with a sample of the Kong treats of Chicken and Rice. The package says "all natural" but I know the folks here may no better. Oliver really like'd the treats, much better than the Health Extension treats that I've been using. Any thoughts?

We also found that he really enjoy's American Cheese....and will be very cooperative if the cheese is the prize.....I was just wondering though how much of the cheese to give him. For the night he got about one whole typical square of it. I always like to say "everything in moderation" but I'm unsure of what that maybe for my 7 month old Shiba.

Thanks,
Steve

I know a lot use the kong's - we refill with peanut butter & freeze.

Jazz gets no more than one square of American cheese or tube of string cheese per day.

We do the same with our kong. Organic PB and into the freezer, keeps the kids busy for hours.

I would say one square per day is reasonable for the cheese.

I have never used the Kong brand treats. We usually fill our Kong's with peanut butter and freeze. If they are REALLY good, they will get their Kongs filled with pumpkin or sweet potato. Yum!

Cheese makes my dogs have funkier than normal gas, so we usually do not give them much cheese. A small chunk of gouda every couple of weeks is their limit.

You also wants to make sure Oliver stays cooperative so don't give cheese unless you are in a training session or something of that nature. If he works hard for cheese make sure he knows he has to do the work to get the prize!

we also fill ours with pb & plain yogurt mixed and freeze, or with cottage or cream cheese. I never tried the kong treats because I thought they were pricey! lol! But the Kong itself is totally worth it!

we give our pups cheddar cheese curds when training only - they go nuts! They get about 5-6 full curd pieces during a training session.

Mochi also gets frozen pb in the kong, sometimes also treats that are harder to get out, not the ones that just fall out. He has to really work for his treats. Sometimes, especially for training, we will give him cheese. Other times I just train him when feeding kibble in the evening. Now for training something like the recall, I am still trying to find out what's best because not even cheese helps much with that LOL!

What size Kong do you guys use? Have you also used the puppy kongs? If so what size?

In the beginning I only had the senior one (softer) and small size to see how he would like it. He loves it but since it's small it always gets stuck somewhere under the couch or elsewhere. Therefore I now usually give him a classic medium sized kong (red medium) that he also loves. It makes more noise for the people under us (haven't complained yet) but at least it doesn't get stuck everywhere and i can also fit bigger/more treats. If this is your only dog right now, for a shiba puppy I would use a small puppy kong. Usually a chew toy should be big enough for the dog to chew on it and not too small (so the dog doesn't choke on it/swallow it) If there are more dogs using the same toys, the toy should sized to fit the largest dog (otherwise the larger dogs might swallow/choke on the small toys)

so, a small puppy kong should be good. then when he grows move up to a regular (red) medium

Question about the peanut butter, do you guys stick to the creamy type, or do you also give chunky? Is it safe to give them chunky, or does everyone advise against it? (Figure this would be an interesting and relevant question for the topic)

About the kong size - we give the tough chewer one, its black and has a dalmation on the packaging.

We use creamy PB, never tried the chunky, and I like to keep chunky for myself :)

I make my own so it's what we call mildly chunky. The chunks are very small (think of the size of sprinkles).

yes, small puppy kong should be good for now and as tsukitsune mentioned, the black one is ok too, depending on the type of chewer your pup is/will be. For my shiba who is an adult shiba, the medium one is perfectly fine.
As for the peanut butter, I use the creamy kind, never tried the chunky one.

Thanks for all the input.....We're going to try the PB and see how that goes.
