Hoses and Lead Content

I'm still doing my research and came across this troubling nugget of information. Having worked in the envrionmental field, I'm quite familiar with the effects of lead poisoning, but never realized that Hoses were a real source of concern for leaching lead, until now. "On July 12, 2007 “Good Morning America” covered a story about reporters from ABC's Phoenix affiliate KNXV-TV. The reporters bought 10 garden hoses randomly at places like Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Target and Ace Hardware.

They filled sections of the hoses with clean water, sealed the ends and put them outside for about a day. Then they delivered that water to a lab. Five of the 10 hoses came back with levels of lead higher than what the Environmental Protection Agency allows for drinking water: 15 parts per billion. Four of those came back with extremely high lead levels. Of the four hoses with the extremely high lead levels, the lab found one with lead levels of 290 parts per billion, which is almost 20 times higher than what the EPA allows for drinking water."

This is actually quite disturbing, because I am always using the hose to fill water bowls and pools during the summer.

Yikes, scary! I used to drink out of the hose all the time when I was a kid..(YEAH YEAH, I KNOW, "NO WONDER!")

Since the hoses in Europe are probably not much different (if any) I can say the same... always used to drink that water or at least bathe/shower in it and swallow some that way.

My mom never let us drink from hoses as a kid - maybe that was why?

Not to downplay things, but they used water sealed in a hose for a full day outside, presumably baking in the sun for much of that time. ??!!! How many of us would not /did not let the hose run for a bit to let all the old, stagnant water flush out before drinking from it? I'd like to see them measure the water as it came out of a hose as people normally drink from it. Big to do about nothing IMO. Those with brains become scientists, and the others become TV reporters who think they are scientists.
