Kelly got spayed today. (Updated)

edited April 2009 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)
she's sleeping on her bed right now. but she is shaking/shivering. i put a blanket over her, just wondering if its normal for her to shiver.

other then that she was pretty energetic when she got home, she wanted to run but i didnt let her because i was afraid she would open her wound. and i can tell her muscles are a little weak from the surgery. so i quickly brought her back in after she did her business.

any advice or tips would be appreciated :)

Just keep up what you're already doing. It will get increasingly difficult as she starts to feel better, but keeping her quiet and calm is really important.

As for the shaking, it is probably a side effect of the anesthesia or pain meds. Just keep an eye on it for now. If it doesn't get better by tomorrow, call the vet.

Shivering is very normal, just keep her warm and as comfy as possible. and like DL said, call the vet if it continues past the first day.

No jumping, no climbing, no running or other fun stuff for about 2 weeks. Hope she feels better.

    Speedy Recovery Kelly!

Sake was a bit shaky the first night too, but she was fine the next day. Just keep her calm and not too crazy and she will do fine!

Best wishes for a speedy and eventless recovery for Kelly! I am sure once the anesthesia wears off completey, the shaking will go away. If not, like everyone else said, give your vet a call.

well i got some bad news (for me) she learned how to take her e-collar off (i have no idea how) and shes super hyper. looks like its going to be a long 2 weeks for me lol. thanks for all the comments!

LOL - don't worry, it passes by really quickly. She'll be free again before you know it. As for the e-collar, I got Ninja THIS ONE from Petco and it worked pretty well. It wasn't too big where he would hit everything, but big enough where he couldn't lick. He was much more comfortable sleeping too, since his head was automatically elevated on a nice cushion :)

I have to loop gauze through Beebe's e-collar and then loop it through her regular collar which she can't remove. Maybe that wouldn't work if she was determined to get it off, who knows.

Oh god, I remember e-collar issues (I wasn't that long ago, come to think of it) when we got Tikaani fixed. He chewed through two e-collars, and was so hyper I didn't know what to do. He had two incisions (only one ball dropped) so we had to be extra careful. We eventually kept him on a short leashed, tied up in the living room, and I played tug with him while keeping him on his back or in a down position.

Hope everything gets sorted out with the e-collar (maybe you can give her some supervised collar free sessions), and everything will be over with before you go insane, just hang in there.

Thank again for the advice and comments everyone. this has been pretty difficult though. her energy level was a little off the first few hours but later that night and the last couple days she has been just as energetic. Its hard to keep her from running laps.

The 2nd night she took off her ecollar sometime during the night and when i woke up she was licking her wound, good thing it didn't open up and i did some disinfecting with wound lotion for dogs. she also wont eat or drink much but doesnt appear depressed.

finally she has been ultra stubborn, disobeying simple commands and not stopping with I tell her no. yikes :)

There is also the bite not collar if the other is not working. Depends on the dog. I would not worry about commands for now.

oooh...I wish I knew about this bitenot collar existed about 3 days ago! Ichi scratched his leg (having a nightmare in his wire kennel, I think) and now has an Elizabethan collar to prevent him from turning and licking his leg.
