    Finally some Honey Spam!

My kids would never get roll over so I can't help you there, but she looks AWESOME!

Sorry for the long lengths in time between spam. Lifes busy with two kids, a hubby who at times I consider my thrid kid, and a furbaby! hahahah And since I seem to be the only one who ever thinks about pulling out the camera.....not alot of pics.

I think we are gonna try to teach Honey "Paw" or "shake" next. I was told the best way to do that is to just grab her hand and say SHAKE. Is that right???

    Man, she's cute!

As for the training, I think you've got the right idea. I would hold off on the verbal command until she has the behavior down. Try moving the treat to her side so her head turns 90 degrees and then slowly move it over her body so she rolls over.

    Honey is so pretty!!!!!!!

I pretty much failed at training class so I can't be of much help. Keiko knows sit and I pretend she knows down (although without a treat she won't do that one). I always wished I was more focused on helping her learn fun tricks!

Cute pics, I like the one where she has two different colored eyes.

Never really taught any of the dogs 'roll over', Tetsu doesn't like it and Tikaani gets pushy, but for 'Paw' I started with food inside a fist. I let them work at trying to get the food until they tried to paw at it, then I opened my hand up and gave them the food. I worked it to a flat hand with my thumb holding the treat into the palm, and then holding the treat in the hand they weren't giving 'paw' to. Add the voice command and they put two and two together. With that fist starter, I have gotten them both to give 'paw', give 'other'(paw), give both paws, and place paw on my leg.

What I've notice with Tetsu and 'paw', I not sure if this is a shiba thing or not, but he'll give 'paw' in a way that looks like he thinks your hand is really dirty or disguting and try as hard as he can to keep from contact. It's kind of funny to watch though

What kind of treats do you guys use while training. I used Cheese in the video. Honey LOVES cheese!!! lol But I dont want to give her too much of it. When I watch shows like "It's me or the dog" I always wonder what they use.

lol I'm sooo new to all this. Honey is MY first dog. The hubby has always brought home strays....lol....but Honey is.....well....the first dog that I've ever really called MINE. I've learned so much from her it's amazing!!! It's kinda scary how much of a bond I have with her. I really dont think that there is any love in this world that is as pure as the love of a dog.

I just want to add a BIG THANKS to you all for putting up with all my silly questions! ahah You all have helped me SO MUCH! I'd be lost without this forum! ahahhah

I use a brand of natural dried meats that the dogs go CRAZY for - http://www.canz.com/realmeat/dogtreats.html We've had lamb and venison and they've loved them both so far.

The only thing the picky one (Keiko) has ever given higher value to were some REALLY REALLY stinky salmon treats our trainer had.

For Joey, I typically use some Wellness grain free treats for everyday stuff. If I need high value, I'll use turkey hot dogs or cheese. But that's getting increasingly rare as he gets older.

Lucy, unfortunately, due to her issues is relegated to Purina Gentle Snackers only.

For my guys, I've used American cheese, hot dog chunks, Wellness Core kibble (can only buy the small bag at the store so we use it as a healthy treat), and bites of baby carrots. We may also be getting some home-made jerky from Tom's co-worker, which has been made for a dog who is allergic to everything, so we're going to try that as well.

I think anything soft and smelly is better than anything else; soft to make it easier to break/chop up, and smelly to be more enticing to the dog with out them having to eat it right away.

Some things I learned about "roll over" (take it for what it's worth because I've only been able to teach Ichi how to play dead).

    Put dog in down position.
Move treat so it is to just behind the dogs head so they have to turn and "roll" on their side to get it.
Keep it in that relative position and the dog should roll over in trying to get it.

Regarding paw/shake, I would do as Beth has laid out. Put the treat in your hand and close it to make a fist. Let the dog smell that you have a treat and they will usually touch your fist with their paw to try and paw it out. If you were using a clicker, this is when you'd click and treat. Rinse and repeat until you can get it reliably, then add the vocal command. Get that down and you could open up your hand palm facing skywards and say the command. Once they paw, then you can click and treat.

We don't keep cheese handy but the hot dogs is like gold for Ichi.

    Honey is adorable.

With whatever tricks or things I teach the dogs, I like to make it hands off in that I am not manipulating them into the desired pose. They don't seem to like it or learn how to do the actual task if they are used to me doing it for them (like placing them into a sit or down, or holding the paw up for them).

They're smart dogs, let the dog learn how to do the task as much as possible without you touching them-the little gears in their heads really have to work that way and I think they remember stuff better.

Well Honey has really gotten the hang of "roll over". As soon as she hears me take the wrapper of the slice of Cheese she's already in the "Down" position. LOL At that point all I have to do is tap the floor and now she will roll over. She's SO eager to please.

Our next challenge will be "play dead". LOL Another useless trick, but still fun and stimulating for Honey. Any advice on how to begin this trick??? :D
