Which breeder did you get your Shika?

I know I've read blurbs somewhere, but I just wanted to know who each shikoku has come from.

Well the list is pretty short, as there are relatively few Shikoku owners here in the US who also post here on the forum.

Basically, me, grandemu (who hasn't posted in a long while) and 1 other girl (cannot remember her user nam, dog's name was Kiba) got the 2007 litter from Peggy. There is someone else who has 1 from the more recent litter from Ikon. All others came from Katja, who has more Shikoku and also for a longer period in North America. I believe Peggy brought her 2 into the US in 2005 or so.

Where did brad get Kona from?

I was going to get a Shika from Peggy too. She was a really nice person to talk to and I was actually going to visit her, but since she was in the middle of moving, that did not happen. I ended up adopting a Shiba Inu instead.

I know Brad's website lists that they breed Kais and Shikokus, but I haven't heard from anyone getting a puppy from them. Katja and Peggy are the primary North American Breeds, and I know ShikokuSpirt (sorry, first name escapes me) got her dogs imported from Japan. I also think there is one or two breeders in Europe.

There is a link of several breeders on the forums. All of them are reputable breeders. You can't go wrong with either one.

I also have a pup on order with Akashima kennel. A female pup from one of Katja's boys and girls unrelated to my boy Kuma.

Beth, I don't think that you will go wrong with either kennel. I know that Paul (who posts here rarely) did get a Shikoku puppy from Katja (same litter as Jessica's Miko), but what swayed him to get a Shikoku at all was visiting my boy Kuma. He went with Katja because he had to wait less time (ie, Peggy wasn't going to breed hers soon at that time).

Temperment wise, you couldn't ask for a better dog than Kuma. He loves all people and especially children. I think that the pups from Akashima are often also that way too (ie, look at the videos of Rakka with hondru's son).

If I get my kishu...first thing I am going to do is photoshop him into a loldog saying like "WHY INTERNET NO THINK I MEDIUM SIZED TOO?" or "MY MOMMY NOT TELL ME I NEED COLORS TO BE SHIKA" lol

ohhhhh the waiting is very very hard...

    your getting a shikoku too?

Just as Joe said, I imported my Shikoku from Japan.

=(^-^)= I'm also getting more Shikoku soon -smiles-. So I'm gonna be running off to Japan to fetch them within the next year or so. We need to introduce more bloodlines to North America.

I agree, there needs to be a wider Shikoku gene pool available here. It seems there are too many related dogs here to have a really healthy breeding program. Great news there are some imports comming in.

Corina-you get your imports as pups? Do you get to pick them out at the kennel when you're there, or are they pre-chosen for you by their breeder? Just curious how it works.

I trusted the Breeder I got my Shikoku from. He's been in Shikoku for over 30 years. And I was very impressed by his dogs. I met him the year prior beforing importing my 1st Shikoku (Shoushuu "Kei-kun"). He gave me exactly what I asked for. Shoushuu is a stud fee puppy from a breeding with his male. I had another choice, an older Akagoma male from the same sire but I was really, super happy with Shoushuu.

Then for my 2nd Shikoku, he sent photos of 3 females from a breeding he liked. I picked Kotomi based on how the person in the photo held her. She was able to handle being held but was also relaxed in a "loose" hold ( Puppy 2 ). Whereas one sister couldn't be held at all, except under the arms (a defiant pup I thought - Puppy 1 ). The other sister had to be "coddled" tightly (I'm thinking insecure & fearful - Puppy 3 ). So I choose Kotomi and the breeder said "This is very good puppy!". Also my friend's father (Shiba breeder/past GSD breeder) liked Kotomi as well.

I'm happy with both my Shikoku. However, next time I will go to Japan and pick out my puppies at 8 weeks in person.

Yes! I will need a ranch, lol. I'm actually looking into property. I keep moving everytime I get another dog, lol. I need to live somewhere where my animal count doesn't matter & where I can have my super awesome set-up. I have some designs in mind for cat & dog enclosures. And I want a whelping room in the house. I want to make my 1st floor to be very animal friendly. I swear I didn't want to have anymore then 6-8 dogs at a single time. However, I do have the experience of caring for multiple dogs (40+) all in one day each day. So I'm trying to space everyone out a little bit by age. I keep making future layouts of my breeding program & my dog count. So that I can have one on one time with all my dogs. It helps though that I have some friends/family members interested in a puppy to co-own. I even already have family members who want some of my dogs when they retire (though a hard decision to make <-- btw, I'll still be financially supporting my senior dogs). Seriously, this is an expensive lifetime committment but I enjoy it. I'm also planning on doing fostering/rescue for cats & dogs. So I will need tons of space!

Does this page have like multiple posts? I need to get to a computer, my cell phone is all messed up. I'll probably end up just combining posts! Sorry!

That was a a good observation about the pups positions while being held-I wouldn't have picked up on that at all. I like your setup plans, especially the whelping area inside your house.
