Harness Question

edited April 2009 in General
I've noticed that Katsu's harness is starting to leave a mark on her fur even when the harness is off. I think she's still to young for a collar, but even if she wasn't I still feel safer haveing her in a harness. We have a nylon one from Petco, I'm wondering if the edges are what's leaving the mark. Do puppia style harnesses leave marks too?

The puppia ones are so soft (too soft for my two!) I imagine they couldn't leave a mark if you tried! I'll let seasoned Puppia users chime in on their use.

Nylon does eventually start to wear away at the hair. Thats currently the situation I'm in now, and I found Planet Dog's hemp/fleece harness. It has the same design as the one I've been using (and LOVE. Its a lupine adjustable) but it will be more gentle on the fur because of the fabric.

I don't notice any marks after using the Puppia but since Katsu is so young, she'll outgrow it quickly and they're a bit more expensive than nylon harnesses. The upside to the Puppias is that I find they are harder to get to and chew (since they conform to the pup's body and the neckline is higher) so it may last longer than a regular harness during her teething stage (get ready!!! lol). Do you keep the harness on her most of the day or just for walks?

You could try looking for a lighter weight nylon or fabric harnesses.

We love the Puppia, but they are not for everybody. They are soft and don't cause damage to the fur and my dogs wear them a lot. Miso will wear his 24/7 with no worries. Sake gets bothered by it after a few hours (She just might be doing her Drama Queen act though).

We also have the standard harness made by B & G in cotton which is a little less irritable than the nylon.

We also have easy walk harnesses, which we are just trying out. They seem like a great Idea, but my poor dogs don't understand why the leash is attached to the front and they end up stopping and staring at me like "WHY do you keep pulling me around!"

LOL Kristin!! I got frustrated with the easy walk on Loki. 'I' was the one not understanding why the leash was hooked to the front (I mean, I know why, but it never seemed to the way it was supposed to). Lucky for me he hated it so much he bit one of the buckles and made it unusable ... perfect excuse to buy a new one!

While Katsu is home in the crate during the day and overnight we take her collar and harness off so she can't choke herself in the crate. As soon as we get home the collar goes on so "eventually" she'll get used to it. The harness is only really on when we take her for a walk. It's so weird because right where the collar and harness sit on her it like the fur is lighter in color. She still has her puppy coat though so maybe her fur is too soft still and that why? I don't know but she looks kinda funny without them on. Its like is wearing a "fur" harness all the time!
