$400 vet visit later...
Ichi has an established baseline of x-rays at 9 months. Based on what I saw with my vet, Ichi is in the clear for Luxating Patella (LP) and Hip Displaysia (HD). Special "Thank you!" goes out to Kristin for reminding me to get Ichi's done at 9 months (some cases of HD can have corrective surgery if caught early) by her mentioning that Sake had her x-rays done!
I did not get my dog from a reputable breeder so this precautionary measure is a great relief and brings great peace of mind and was well worth it.
Scary part is Ichi is ~16" at the withers and 23.5 lbs (on an empty stomach) and his growth plates still haven't completely sealed!!!

Looks like you're going to have a big man on your hands ~
Yeah, even dogs from "reputable" breeders it is so important to know where things fail or progress over time. There are some lines in some dog breeds where the HD is late on set. Meaning problems can set in at 6 yrs or so. There are some folks (breeders) that only do prelims before breeding and never take a second look or have penn hip report at 24 months and again never take a look over the life of the dog. It's such a shame that more breed clubs do not encourage monitoring for longer time frames.
So glad your pup is in the clear to begin with : )

Nine months is a good time to do this?
/me taking notes...
Even my own vet was wondering why I wanted to do this pro-active x-ray and what prompted me to do so. Well, under some intense heat during the day, I'll sometimes see Ichi favor one side of his gait (maybe growing pains) during our poop walks and I've felt his shoulders "pop" sometimes when he lunges to get up on the couch. I remembered a fellow forumite (Nochi's owner) describe this as a symptom for their dog having LP. I knew I wanted to get Ichi cleared for HD so I figured I might as well get x-rays for LP while he's under.
Well my vet told me that if Ichi had HD and could be seen in his x-rays at 9 months, it is the best time to get corrective surgery done before he reaches 12 months for him to have the best chance at a full recovery.
My vet explained to me what she saw in the x-rays and that Ichi had good symmetry, good formation and she saw exactly what she expected out of a healthy dog.
If you just search for "Luxating Patella" in comments for this forum, you'll see numerous forumite's stories whose nihonken were diagnosed with LP at various stages.
Hope this helps.

My vet suggested re-doing Sake's x-rays when she is around 2.5 years old.
