Breeder Meeting [edit: Akita]

Tomorrow me and John (fiance) are meeting one of the two breeders we're looking at, there wont be a litter for at least another month or two but we really want to make sure we find the right breeder/pup.

I was just wondering if anyone could give us any tips about what to look out for, we know this is a reputable breeder based on research but this is the first time we'll have ever been to a breeder and aren't entirely sure on what to look for.

We'd eventually like to introduce a rescue or two to our home, in time, and so the temperament of our first dog will be very important.

Also if anyone has any advice for actually choosing the pup, as at the moment we'll have first pick, I've read one thread on here about it and I've been researching but there's very little out there and I know our breeder will help us but I can't help but feel like they'll be a little biased.

I feel like a first time mom!

What type of dog are you getting? I'm assuming a Shiba?

no, sorry, I completely forgot to mention that. We're looking at Akitas, I believe (though don't necessarily understand totally) that we're looking at both American akitas and the original Japanese Inus in an attempt to decide which is the one for us.

There is an article under the help tab (http://www.nihonken.org/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=720) on how to find a good breeder and what to look for. This may help you when you visit.

    thanks KF.

We just got back from the breeder, we got to see all their dogs including both the parents. I wanted to take them all with me right then, they're such sweet and good looking Akitas! We've definitely decided we prefer the American Akita but it was nice to see the other one.

The mother is beautiful and when she's definitely confirmed to have a litter (next tuesday) we'll be putting our deposit down and then counting down the days until we can visit and visit and then take them home (September time). I am far too excited. I'd post pictures of the mother and father but I don't want to overstep my boundaries by reposting pictures from their page. The web page is www.nosferatuakitas.co.uk and the sire is Jonti (Kickin' Up A Storm) and the dam is Minnie (Thundercat).

When we visit the litter after they're born we're taking Johns step-father who used to breed Staffordshire terriers, because it can never hurt to have a second opinion. They used to breed Shibas too but passed their dogs on to their daughter last year. It would've been nice to meet one in the flesh.

Can I just get a head count on how many members here are from the UK? :)

Only 2 people have their location posted from the UK on the member's map. There's probably more but including you a minimum of 3 :D Unless your map is right and you actually live in the middle of the ocean off the coast of Kenya ;)

haha, the UK is as wet as it'd be to live in the middle of the ocean!! Had trouble with the longitude/latitude (it says my town is in Belgium, which it isn't, but nevermind) and now I can't turn it off, I've zeroed it and saved but nothings changed. Meh. It'll be an interesting conversation starter I'm sure, such as this short but sweet conversation, see. The plan, it works ;)

About the longitude and latitude on Google Maps

Just point your browser to this page:
    http://itouchmap.com/latlong.html

At itouchmap.com it's easy to get your longitude and latitude position just by moving the little marker and when you've found your location you'll see the data in the form below the map.
