Smelly dog

edited June 2009 in General
Jack has been eating/rolling in Sea Soil (fish guts mixed with cow manure) and he smells AWFUL! What do you guys do when your pup gets really stinky? Any special shampoos, etc?

Good luck on this one Kyla! I've no idea, but I advise...nose plug. ~

I'm thinking of brushing his teeth, too. We don't have any dog paste though... is it okay to use a tiny bit of human toothpaste? Maybe some baking soda?

That's some good advice, Osy. Right now he's banished to the laundry room. :)

You kno, I actually have Doggy toothpaste [ don't ask lol ] & me dad & I were comparing the ingredients to human toothpaste. The active ingredient was exactly the same, as were the others. Only difference was the doggy toothpaste had some "extra" ingredients. Don't kno if that makes it "ok" to use human toothpaste on a pup, just thought I'd pass on what I discovered.

What? No stinky spam? ;) ~

I am unfortunately without a camera - and he doesn't look any different, lol! He's a little bit grey from the dirt, but other than that you can't tell by looking at him that he smells so bad.

What's the purpose of Sea Soil, and where can one find it? And avoid it?

Sea Soil is a fertilizer/soil that is very rich in nutrients. I'm not sure how widespread its use is, but we have a Sea Soil "factory" very close to our town. As for avoiding it... don't let Katsu dig in people's gardens. ;)

ETA: Jack wasn't digging in someone's garden. Some got spilled in our driveway after a delivery truck parked there.

    Sea soil sounds... delightful.

I've always just used plain glycerine soap to wash the pups, but I recently bought a tub of Pink Solution and apparently you can use it to wash your dog and it'll even take out such odours as skunk and manure. I haven't tried it on the dogs, but it sure works well for cleaning and deodourising other things.

$40 and a groomer for a job like that! They sometimes ask you not to bring him back, but that's alright if it's someplace like Petsmart! As stinky as our dog has gotten we have just used our own shampoo. Works fine and never had any negative results.

No, it's not ok to use human toothpaste on dogs.

The sweeteners in human toothpaste are INCREDIBLY TOXIC to dogs. DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE ON DOGS.

Also dogs can't spit out the foam. If you notice, dog toothpaste doesn't produce foam.

Well, I ended up just leaving him overnight, planning on bathing him and his bedding in the morning. When I let him out, he didn't smell anymore! The dirt spill is gone, too. :D

Ditto.... human tooth paste should not be used on pets.

To rinse the stinky smell out you could use natures miracle skunk remover and rinse out with water. After which you could use oatmeal shampoo etc. with a nice conditioner.
