Shiba scream

edited December 2007 in Shiba Inu (柴犬)

Got this idea from the vaccination discussion and Brad and I have had this discussion before.

When was the first time you heard that infamous scream?

I picked Niko up from the breeder and the whole way home she was screaming.  Now I have read and heard about it but NOTHING prepares you for it.  I was in between laughing and crying.  I was alone and Chad was our of town.  Then I put her right in the kennel to expose her to it and she screamed and screamed.  I thought it was because she was freaked out...no she had to pee.  That was the only time she ever peed in her kennel.  Now it is a regular noise I cant imagine living without.

Moto almost never does it. Except that time some of you may remember the false alarm where we thought he ate a bee.

The first time was on the way home from the breeder.  As soon as the car started moving, he screeched like he was being drawn and quartered.  I took him out of the kennel and held him in my lap the rest of the way home.

I don't know if it was the first time I ever heard it, but the first time I really remember it was at the dog park.  This was a long time ago when Nemo always wanted to play with other dogs.  He would really annoy them just so they would chase him.  He tried to steal a ball from a Viasla and it got pissed, turned around and clamped onto Nemo's rear thigh/hind quarter.  The Viasla was doing this as a warning and showed great restraint, in the position that it had Nemo she could have really done some damage.  I think it did hurt him a bit but there was no blood or teeth marks.  She let go and Nemo ran onto the middle of the trail and jus started screaming.  He was just siting there crying and screaming, and you could hear it across the whole park.  I calmed him down and we enjoyed the rest of our time at the park.

It is really a strange/terrifying noise.

I don't know what a Shiba scream sounds like, but I was camping in Pennsylvania a few years ago and I was awakened suddenly by the most frightening sound I have ever heard. It was like a wail/scream/cry. It turned out to be a bear.

The first time I heard it was when I was clipping Taj's nails, in my old apartment during the middle of the day.  And she was no puppy, like maybe 4 years old, so I had never really known what the "Shiba scream" was that everyone always mentioned about their Shibas.  I must have cut one too short(no blood mind you, but too short for a Shiba) and she screamed bloody murder and pooped on the floor right then and there.  I was shocked and bewildered and was hoping animal cops wasn't going to come pounding on my door asking if I was torturing a small, innocent animal.

idk if I've ever really herd it or not but I think i might have once cause she had gotten under a table and we were trying to get her out and some one kind a got her back leg and pulled her out (gently mind you) and then she just sat and screeched

Now for us it is hard to get it on tape cause it is spontaneous and scary when Niko does it because you think something is wrong.  That vidoe was pretty good and here is another I found

Now I dont think that this video displays smart shiba owners....bathing them should not consist of hosing them down but this is pretty much exactly what I hear.

OOOOOOH!!! I thought when he did that it was because he was hurt! MAn....Well when I first got Ninja, he did not know what stairs were so he could not climb up them, I had to carry him up, but the breeder warned me that he was scared of heights. So my attempt to pick him up he started i guess "screaming" like that...but I thought i was hurting him! So after that I was a bit timid to carry him...so I made my boyfriend do it. The other day I went to take him out, but I forgot something inside so I was closing the door so he wouldn't come back in and he made that scream again, so i thought i hit him, but he wasn't even near the door! It really sounds like a dogs cry...Can you guys tell the difference between a "scream" and a "cry"???

You get to learn your dog over time.  It is still scary but when Niko doesnt stop and is inconsolable I know something is wrong.  Another shiba afraid of heights????  Niko HATES heights and is a non-typical shiba.  And usually, at least with Niko, is something is wrong like she is hurt she shows physical signs of it also.  That scream can mean many many things!!!!!

My dog has only yelped in pain once, and that was when she ran into an electric fence when she was investigating some horses.

Alright. So I just played the video of the shiba being hosed and screaming. Moto stared at the screen perplexed. Piglet came running, on a mission. She then started searching the house trying to find the crying dog. She HATES hearing another dog suffering. She tried to rescue a dog at the vet who was crying the other day.

YEah when I found that Niko was staring head cocked and sasha came running cause she thought something was wrong with Niko.  I had to stop it cause they were NOT happy girls.

Yeah, that video is quite disturbing...I think anyone who watched that video and has a dog will find their dog a bit confused. Its kind of cute that dogs look out for eachother. See even with those video's its a bit hard to tell if they are crying or screaming because its not like they're just chillin there and they start doing it, one guy is hosing his shiba down and the other one some lady is cutting the puppies nails and who knows how far deep she went...

maybe this is a better example? its kind of funny.

That is Niko when she finishes her treats and Sasha hasnt started hers.  Niko voices her irritation very well!  Sasha has a low growl in return which gets Niko going even more.

The video where they are hosing down the shiba really pisses me off.  If you are going to wash your dog, wash your dog.  How would they like it if someone tied them up and kept hosing them past their comfort level.

I know, I was like wtf?

Bathing a shiba means ASAP, quick, without delay and so on.  As I stated it was NOT a good display of good, responsible pet "lovers".

I've always known Moto was weird, but he is perfectly quiet when he gets a bath.

Hahaha sorry if this is considered a "dead" thread, but the links and stories are hilarious. Gen was so spoiled when he was alive. I went rushing everytime he screamed. I gotta show my boyfriend those youtube clips to get him ready for what he's gonna get hehe.

Niko was chewing on a bone last night and must have bit wrong and screamed.  Of course immediate heart drop and jump to check her and she went on to chewing on the bone.  Brat.

I was down in the basement. Our apartment is on the third floor. Apparently Jay (who is kinda huge 6'5 200+) stepped on Moto's foot. I heard the scream from all the way in the basement. I ran up to the third floor and he was already running after Piglet, the little punk. Jay was ghostly white. He felt so bad.

I have a cruelty-free shiba scream video!  It's just Tojo screaming by the door because he's excited to see my mother-in-law, but she's taking a long time to get stuff out of the car.  He absolutely loves her, so he's just wagging his tail and screaming.  I should upload it one of these days.

Nemo does an excited, high pitched scream when we are going to the dog park.  He knows which roads I take, as soon as he sees where we are going, he starts screaming and keeps it up until we get there (5 minutes).  He also prefers to scream right behind my head and in my ear.  It makes me hate him for those 5 minutes.

Poor Jay, I've stepped on Nemo's foot before, one time I even pinched it between the linoleum and the bathroom door as I was closing it.  I always feel like the worst dog owner ever.

Wow Brandon.  You are mean and evil...Wink

Niko loves standing at our shoulder.  Thank God she doesnt pull a Nemo....hehe

Moto does the dog park scream either behind Jasons head or while trying to get on the dashboard. I too share the 5 minutes of hate.

Tojo screams for the dogpark, too.  What Loki does is worse, though.  A couple times, he tried to climb into my lap when we're nearing the dog run, which is not good, seeing as he weighs 65 pounds!  Now they all stay nicely in the back of the station wagon, but they squeal and whine an awful lot.
