Sage is itchy and rashy

Crap- my boy has an itchy, pink rash- it's not severe yet, but its driving him nuts. It's on his underside- belly and in his armpits. I am not sure what manifests in those areas, but I'm going to start with the most obvious thing I can think of-

Back on Thursday we went walking in a forest/wetland area and in one place there were raised boards to walk on- the water on either side was muddy and a bit oily looking. ALL the dogs walked through this, and at the end of the boardwalk, they swam in a creek. On the way back, though, Sage alone lay down in the questionable mud, and though he swam again on the way out of the area in clear water, it was an hour before I could properly bathe him with actual shampoo. I rinsed the hell out of him. This is the only unusual thing he has done that i'd guess could make him itchy and rashy- although I washed him thoroughly afterward.

Anybody else's pup ever get a large rash? I'll be going to the vet tomorrow...I wonder if benadryl will lessen the itch for him in the meantime...

Benedryl should totally help for now. Hope he feels better. Let us know how the vet goes!

He's all active, but he doesn't want to play- he's just restless and itchy, all worked up but wants his momma. Just gave him his bennies, so hopefully it will help. My book says a cold bath will help, but I'm not about to fully soak a thick-coated dog at 9pm. we'll try a cold facecloth to the belly if he seems to need it and it doesnt seem too weird to him.

I've had this happen before, but from something that was down by the creek. It wasn't posion oak. I never really knew. I used Benadryl coupled Aveeno Oatmeal sids bath.

    Hope Sage feels better!

hmmm. did anything change in his diet at all? any new treats? does he wear a harness?

I've been wiping down my Tsuki with hypoallergenic baby wipes after walks to try to keep her environmental allergies in check. I've washed all of her equipment (harness, collar, leash) in dye free, scent free detergent and have been giving her 3/4 capsule benedryl a day. So far, so good actually.

nope, no harness on the Boy- although I covet the ruffwear webmaster harnesses some you have. Same food, same treats...I do mix up his treats, but its nothing he hasn't had before- Chopping up cubes of RedBarn. This morning it is not as red, I suspect because he has been sleeping and not scratching, but I can see it on the inside of his thighs, his belly, and armpits. He;s really furry, but I think the rest of his skin is normal colored. His ears are normal - no itching, redness or warmth. Last night he was scratching his 'pits with a sudden vengeance, and down by his rear as well. Do dogs get poison ivy? I didnt think they did, but maybe I am wrong?

Could be prickly heat, contact dermatitis maybe. Soaking in water can sometimes worsen that by creating more of a humid enviroment. You could try a hydrocortisone spray that's OTC, or pop him in to the vet for a look-see. I remember the horses were covered with little red hives from the chest down last summer, and it turned out they were wandering thru the nettle patch to graze.

We'll hop over the vets at walkin time @ 11. I hate doing this b/c you never know if there will be a lot of dogs waiting, and Sage is anxious and reactive in a crowd of dogs, but it's too warm to leave him in the car till it's our turn. We'll just have to be creative, maybe walk around outside and have the desk ring my cell when its our turn.

That's good advice about the moisture. its been very humid lately (but not yesterday), and I worried about him drying out thoroughly after his bath- but then again this is on his less furry parts- although they are warm parts. Hydrocortisone spray is a good idea, if it comes in a quiet pump bottle- I think aerosol would scare the bejeezus out of him. He is a wary fellow. We'll see what the vet says and take it from there.

When Piglet had her knee surgery and we had to go in for re-checks, I would have the desk call me when it was time for her appointment. While Piglet was okay with most dogs, this was a 24 hour vet hospital and I didn't have as much faith in other owners.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

The important things is our vet ruled out parasites, bug bites and it looks like it was some contact rash from the grasses or mud at Carney where we went hiking most likely. We'll continue the bendaryl 3x day, but he also gave me a spray Relifor that is good to relieve localized itchy red areas, as long as they aren't open sores. That should work quickly. I can also use it on Reilly's paws when they get itchy, as they sometimes do. If it lasts longer than a couple more days we'll reevaluate.

And he DID bark when he spotted a husky going by the front desk, but it was otherwise pretty empty of dogs in the waiting area, so we were fortunate. They know us, and got us in a room quickly. I had Sage wear his soft muzzle in public for the first time, it was the least of his worries, I think- I was still able to give him his treat for getting on the scale, although he wasn't chewing as comfortably because he couldnt open his mouth enough to get the treat into his back teeth as usual. I broke the pieces small for him.

Nobody was really around but the one other customer at the counter didn't look at us like we were freaks for having a muzzle on, she looked at him rather sympathetically, "Awww...!" I think a lot of the public perception piece with reactive dogs is - well two things- #1 is to be WITH him- not the people- and work with him & talk to him, and #2 is that I think b/c people actually see us working, they view us well: worry much less about us than someone else with an intimidating-looking dog who appears rather "off duty" in regards to the dog.

Also the office has a new vet in the practice, so I asked if I could meet her and introduce Sage so that if we come in sometime and get her instead of Jon, she'll know us and Sage will have met her before. Although he loves people, (right, Jess?) but anything I can do to make vet visits more comfortable for him.

Glad to hear that it's not parasites or buggies biting him! Hopefully the spray and the bendryl will give him some relief!

Good job at the vet too. :) Heal well Sage!

Sage totally liked me more than Riley did. Not that Riley disliked me. More like he could care less that I was there. Sage on the other hand decided I looked a bit like a mattress.

    Glad things went well.
