Spay wound question?

edited July 2009 in General
We noticed a small amount of blood by Katsu's incision. Nothing major. It's not bleeding right now, but the blood seemed fresh. It was like a drop or two. Is this normal or should we be getting ready to go to the emergency vet?

Sometimes after surgery they will seep at the suture site. Keep her a little less active if she is moving around or jumping up or down off the couch. Keep an eye on it and make sure she is not picking at the site. Tomorrow you can get a clean washcloth dipped in warm water to hold on there for a few minutes and it should help a bit. If you notice any large lumps and swelling up with associated redness then have the vet take a look. Sometimes the suture line is not tidy and the ends of the stitches stick out a bit pricking the dog, so keep an eye on that so Katsu does not pick at that.

thanks SNF, you always have really good answers.

Irene, sorry we can't baby sit Spuddy. If it wasn't for the stoopid wedding and the stoopid spaying, and her stoopid stitches will still be in.

    lol no problem.
Spuds had the crust stuff the first day, i have gross pics we can send you...b/c i was taking pics day by day to make sure she was really recovering...we also bought betadine solution from the pharmacy to clean the wound (that worked the first day..after that she would freak i guess b/c it's cold to her skin)

The pinkness subsided the 2nd day late, but it was really pink but did not get RED or inflammed more than the first day.

The smell freaks some dogs so I would not worry about using betadine. Some solutions actually do sting on a fresh suture line. Yes even the ones that are not supposed to.

Stick to warm wash cloth or just leave it alone for week or so.

hmmm probably was the smell that freaked her out the 2nd day...but yeah, after the 2nd day we stopped using anything on her and she was fine :) We were lucky it didn't rain the time she was healing, so it was always dry and we took her for short to the point walks for the first 5 days or so. Do your buisness and come back walks. Oh, and don't know if the vet told you, but no exposure to other dogs for afew days as they can smell she's weak.

I don't think she told us that. But I'd keep her on doggy lock down for a while because she get's so freaking cracked out when she sees another dog she likes.

Aw, little Katsu had her big girl operation. I remember taking Beebe to her day care about a week after her spay thinking it would be fine and that she was healed enough. The other dogs swarmed her immediately and were up in her business inspecting every inch of her like never before, including licking her sutures for her. I had to take her right home, but the other dogs knew she was not up to par, it was weird.
