Look Mylo! *dog looks in opposite direction*

edited July 2009 in Behavior & Training
I've noticed that there's no such thing as literally pointing something out to Mylo. If I say "Mylo, go over there" and point, he has no idea where to go. Or if I say "Mylo, look, it's right here!" he doesn't look where I'm pointing. How do I train him to know that where I point is where he should go, or look? It's an interesting thing because as far as I can remember (which really might not be too reliable) most dogs I've met know what pointing is.

My dogs wont go away from me where I point, but they are completely on the hunt if I point at someplace on the ground, in a stone wall, or wave my hand around a vague area and say LOOK!- this is, I think, because it is always something super exciting like a snake, or other wiggling creature, or I am gesturing around a place where I've hidden a stuffed kong. I can;t even say "look" in conversation because they go nuts and begin sniffing around and wagging.

hahahahaha that's awesome. What actually prompted me starting this thread is because there was a HUGE fly in the apartment today, and I wanted Mylo to hunt it (cus he loves it). Whenever he lost the fly I would point to it, and he was just confused and kept looking at me rather than my hand.
